Reviewed in Germany on October 8, 2016

- Filmmusik: Yann Tiersen - (Alben: Amèlie, Les Choristes, Good Bye Lenin, Summer 78), James Horner (Avatar)
- PoP: Adele, Amy MacDonald, The Black Eyed peas, Birdy, Dido, Duffy, Coldplay, Lana del Rey, Sia, Calvin Harris: (How deep is your love), Major Lazer: (Lean On), Deavid Guetta usw.
- Klassik: Beethovens 9 und 5 Sinfonie, Mozart Piano Sonata No. 11 usw.
- Rap: Eminem usw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most comfortable, no-frills headphones with great ANC: better than Sony’s MDR-1000X?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2016
I’ll share with you here my real world experience of the highly rated Bose QuietComfort 35 to help you make the best purchase decision for your own needs. My unbiased, non-technical review will be as detailed as possible and supported by a comprehensive photo coverage.

If you prefer concise reviews, I invite you to scroll down to the 'CONCLUSION' section where I summarised the key strengths and weaknesses. Last but not least, I’ll also compare the QC35 (£289) to a slightly more expensive alternative option, Sony’s MDR-1000x (£329).

As far as I am concerned, I didn’t have to wait for my Apple iPhone 7 Plus to convince me (not force me) to switch to wireless headphones. I find them much more convenient as long as they are reliable and comfortable, they sound good (multimedia and calls) and, last but not least, they have enough juice to serve you well as and when you need them.

I was really excited to purchase the Bose QuietComfort 35, the long-awaited wireless successor of the king of (active) Acoustic Noise Cancelling (ANC), the Bose QC25 headphones.

I invite you to find below my comprehensive feedback on this excellent pair of noise cancelling bluetooth headphones after using them in a number of different situations (music, youtube videos, calls, FaceTime, Google Duo), environments (home, street, train, plane) and devices (iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Air, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro, Coolpad Cool1 Dual).

Please note that I wear glasses most of the time, I work from home a lot or in the office (hot desking), and I travel a lot. I love technology and I own several Android and Apple smartphones.

Now, back to the review.

First of all, let’s talk about the packaging (box, accessories, carrying case), followed by the design (build quality, comfort, key features) of the QC 35.

1. PACKAGING____
The headphones are coming in a compact box which includes a hard carrying case, USB charging cable, 2.5mm audio cable for wired connection and a few instruction leaflets.

Carrying case
It’s a well-made hard case which seems durable enough and despite not being too padded offers some level of protection of your beloved headphones.

It’s convenient with two pockets (one internal, one external) to carry your small accessories and other cables.

In my opinion, the biggest issue with the case is the lack of fixed, padded separator to secure the headphones and prevent damage by rubbing when folded. Bose includes a small band of light material that you have to position yourself each time you are done using your headphones. That is, if you successfully manage not to loose it!

2. DESIGN____
The headband connecting the two well-padded earcups is also well-padded and those headphones are rather light with a well-distributed weight. As a result, the level of physical pressure on your head is almost inexistent which is no short of extraordinary.

I can confidently confirm that those headphones are the most comfortable pair I’ve ever owned and I had no problem wearing them for most of my recent flight from London to Dubai. My ears virtually didn’t get hot nor sweated.

I believe I have a rather average/normal sized head for a 6 foot tall man, and I wear the headphones at about 0.5 inch (on each side) from the tightest headband configuration. In my opinion, this is a good option for people with small heads.

On the left earcup you will find a single 2.5mm jack for connecting the wired connection to your device. This is a bit of a bummer as a standard 3.5mm cable would have been more convenient, especially if you loose the official cable.

On the right earcup you'll find a power slider, micro USB charging port, and buttons for pausing, skipping, raising and lowering the volume. You will also find a LED light indicating power on and bluetooth pairing.

Overall, the buttons work well on both Apple and Android devices. Nevertheless, I thought I’d mention that I noticed a 1-second lag to pause/resume a video or a song. Also, sometimes my iPhone wouldn’t lower or increase the volume despite pressing the volume buttons on the headphones.

It wasn’t a big deal for me, but please note that holding the middle button will also launch ‘voice control’ which proved ineffective based on my few initial tests.

Of course, those headphones have a foldable design which makes them not only very flexible but also seems to provide an excellent level of durability even for the road warriors among us.

3. COMFORT____
The QC 35 are extremely comfortable on your head: you hardly notice them at all. And that’s incredible. My ears didn’t get warm or sweaty. The headphones also sit comfortably around your neck.

Based on my experience, the only issue with it is the ‘cabin pressure’ effect in quiet environment generated by the always-on ANC. It is too intense for me to wear at home for long periods of time.

4. FEATURES____
Not much except for an industry leading ANC activated by default. Shame we don’t have the option to deactivate it in silent surroundings.

I thought I’d mention the excellent voice prompt and the companion app available for both Android and Apple devices.

The VOICE prompt is quite helpful. A well-articulated female voice tells you when: 1. the headphones is in pairing mode, 2. the headphones is trying to connect to already paired devices, 3. the headphones are connected to a device (the voice will spell the device name which is neat), 4. the level of battery life (it’s precise / 10% increments), 5. the device is disconnected.

Please note that the voice is annoying when trying to pair… especially if you want to block sound on a plane without listening to anything… but I have some good news: you can deactivate it once and for all via the mobile app.

The MOBILE app is also helpful. It gives you the ability to: 1.
add/edit the list of connected devices, 2. control the volume, 3. display the battery life, 4. set an auto off-timer (never -by default-, 5mn, 20mn, 40mn, 1h and 3h), 5. turn voice prompt on/off, 6. select the language among 11 (including French, Spanish and German).

Please note that contrary to the feature-packed Sony MDR-1000x, Bose doesn’t offer here AptX support for high fidelity audio as they ‘felt the quality offered by standard Bluetooth was good enough’ according to techradar.com.

5. BLUETOOTH PAIRING____
You can connect to several devices without any problem.

To pair, you just have to switch and hold the power slide/button for a couple of seconds.

When both devices are already paired, it’s extremely fast from switching on the headphones (bluetooth already on). It slower when bluetooth not activated on phone first (it takes about 4-5 sec to connect).

I also successfully paired my QC 35 to four devices at the same time (iPhone 7 plus, iPad Air, 2 Android phones).

6. BLUETOOTH RECEPTION/RANGE____
The Bose QC35 offers a decent range and a strong connection with your phone. I have experienced any of the annoying disconnection issues which happen far too often with so many wireless headphones.

The reach is good: I can leave my phone in our bedroom, walk in the flat, kitchen, lounge, go on the balcony and leave the flat pass the hallway and the staircase door. Then I loose the signal.

7. PERFORMANCE____
Overall, those headphones sound good. They are not very loud though when compared to other wireless headphones, but there is virtually no leakage.

The ANC is market leading: if it works like a charm, it’s too strong for my taste in quiet environments and -like most ANC- it doesn’t block voices but turns them into odd, ‘metallic’ murmurs.

The call quality is also good, which is important for me as I’m using my headphones both for personal and business use.

I found that the high frequencies are a bit shy, the base and the mid frequencies being more present.

I confirm there is no latency when you are watching YouTube videos on your smartphone/tablet.

TESTS
You will find below the results of my tests in various environments. I hope you will find my insights helpful.

1. Home - silence
I might be more sensitive then most people, but the ANC hurt my head in very quiet environments. Shame Bose doesn’t let you switch off the ANC.

I have to admit that I don’t understand why they wouldn’t give you the choice, but they are not the only ones: Senheiser doesn’t offer the option either on their best-selling bluetooth ‘Momentum 2.0’ headphones.

Good for calls, recipients would hear me well. As a matter of fact, people would hear me better and louder than the Sony MDR-1000X.

2. Street - very windy terrace of a coffee shop on a busy road
I video called my parents on Google Duo and FaceTime (4G).

For both services, the sound quality of the QC35 was excellent for the recipients: they couldn’t hear the wind, my voice was clear and loud. It’s important to note that they could also clearly hear the people around me.

At my end, the audio quality was good too.

3. A busy Apple store
The QC35 does a great job blocking a good amount of background noise while I was listening to some music, but not so much the voices which I could still here and which sounded distant and distorted.

On FaceTime, my mother could hear people around me as well as me.

4. Train - Eurostar London to Paris
Same experience when I was listening to some music: I could hear the voices of the passengers behind me which sounded high pitched and distorted: a bit like someone at the other end of a phone call. It sounds very weird.

5. Plane - London to Dubai
The QC35 successfully blocked most of the engine and cabin noises without giving me a headache (no ‘cabine pressure’ sensation, unlike in quiet environments). I could still hear perfectly well the two guys behind us speaking.

I had to set the volume to 6-7 to hear the music more than the voices behind. The headphones are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time. But I don’t find the physical controls very practical.

SOUND LEAKAGE
This wasn’t a perfect setup, I just used the recorder app on my iPhone (placed about 30cm away from me) to measure the sound leakage at 25%, 50% and 75%.

I am delighted to report that there was no leakage at all until 50-60% and just a few faint murmurs at 75%.

POWER LEVEL
Again, this wasn’t a perfect setup, I just used an app on my iPhone (placed in-between the ear cups) to measure the sound level at 25%, 50% and 75%.

The results are respectively 40-45 db, 60 db and 70-75 db.

AUDIO QUALITY - MUSIC
I LOVE listening to some good music: anything from Adele to the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Hozier, Eminem, Jimmy Hendrix and Pavarotti. But I am not an audio expert nor a dedicated audiophile.

You will find below my honest feedback which might not be very well-articulated from a technical stand point. Please forgive me.

I listened on my iPhone 7 Plus to a rather eclectic selection of brilliant songs to test the range of the Bose QC35 and its competitor, the Sony DMR-1000X: ‘Hello’ by Adele, ‘Seven Nation Army’ by the White Stripes, ‘Love the way you lie’ by Eminem and Rhianna, ‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash and Carmina Burana conducted by Andre Rieu.

Highway to hell

Bose: bass heavy, very quiet voices
Sony: bass heavy too, voice muted but not as much, great solo

Hello

Bose: bass heavy, can't hear voice at 2:40?
Sony: hear voice better than with the Bose

Seven nation army

Bose: quieter, bass heavy, voice not as clear
Sony: much more pleasing audio experience

Love the way you lie

Bose: good, big boom sounds, arrangements very subtle (mediums low)

Sony: much louder, Rhianna voice better defined, bass heavy but more balanced with voice, mediums more present

Carmina Burrata

Bose: mid good, bass less present
Sony: applause, love intro, mid after intro, faint voices are clearer

8. BATTERY LIFE____
As advertised, the battery would constantly last a bit over 20 hours, which is excellent.

It charges from 0-100% in about 2h30-3h. Please note like with the Sony MDR-1000X, you can’t use the Bose QC 35 while charging…

======================================================
CONCLUSION
Unarguably, the Bose QC 35 are a great, no frills pair of bluetooth headphones which provides some industry leading ANC. They are well-worth the £279.85.

I LIKED
+ good case
+ slim design
+ incredibly comfortable, even with glasses
+ best-in-class ANC
+ the price is justified
+ voice info and companion app
+ excellent battery life
+ easy pairing (multiple devices)
+ small heads friendly
+ virtually no sound leakage

I WISHED
- it had more built-in features
- the materials were more premium (plastic built is not as slick as similarly priced high-end headphones) - I am a bit picky here-
- you could switch off the ANC (your ears will feel the ‘cabin pressure’ in quiet environments)
- they provided a standard cable (3.5mm, not 2.5mm)
- the manual control were not so fiddly
- you couldn’t hear distorted voices from people around you
- the volume was higher
- it supported AptX
- listening to music was more pleasing

WHO ARE THE BOSE QC35 FOR?
Road warriors and people who: are looking for peaceful travels and commutes, prefers understated/discrete designs, use controls on their phone, wear it on the neck for long period of time, use multiple devices on regular basis, do a lot of voice calls. It’s also ‘smaller head’ friendly.
======================================================

TIPS
- you can deactivate the voice in the app
- you can also edit the list of paired devices in the app
- if you tend to wear your headphones around your neck when not using them, you will have to reverse the ear cups to have the external side on display instead of the inside padding.

HOW DO THEY COMPARE TO THE SONY MDR-1000X?
As much as I LOVE the QC35, which deserves a 5-star ratings at its price point, I've been using the slightly more expensive Sony MDR-1000x as my daily driver: they offer in my opinion a better customer experience overall with their superior audio performance, connectivity, controls and additional functionalities.

1. PACKAGING: winner Sony
2. DESIGN: winner Sony
3. COMFORT: winner Bose
4. FEATURES: winner Sony
5. BLUETOOTH PAIRING: winner Bose
6. BLUETOOTH RANGE: winner Sony
7. PERFORMANCE - Audio Quality: winner Sony
7. PERFORMANCE - ANC: tie
8. BATTERY LIFE: winner Sony

You will find more information the Sony MDR-1000X ([[ASIN:B01LD5GO5U Sony MDR-1000X Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Ambient Sound Touch Sensor High Resolution Audio Headphones - Black]]), which is now my daily driver, in my upcoming Amazon review.
