Review
Grammy, Tony, and Emmy award-winning performer, Billy Porter: "I clutched my pearls through this page-turning read that's laugh-out-loud funny-she's a ki-ki, darling! It's equally heartbreaking, suspenseful, and always fast-paced. The category is: legendary."
Actress, singer, and fashion designer Vanessa Williams: "Jay has a singular voice which manages to be indulgent and gossipy, while still smart and sharp."

About the author

I’ve spent 20 years on both sides of the camera working with the world’s most celebrated celebrities and for fashion industry magazines as a Fashion Correspondent, Series Regular, Host, Judge, Creative Director and Executive Producer on some of the decade’s hottest television shows. I’m most well recognized for my roles as Fashion Correspondent for E! Network and as the Creative Director and Producer of the global phenomenon “America’s Next Top Model.”
I first came up with the idea to write my debut novel in 2014, and like many new writers, I said to myself, “who am I to write a book?” However, the concept and the characters wouldn’t leave my mind. I started writing down story ideas, followed by character studies, and then one day—while on a six-mile run, back in 2017—I saw Chapter One play out in my mind like a movie on a screen. I knew then, I had to put pen to paper, and write the book.
Ultimately, “The Wig, The Bitch & The Meltdown” was a book I needed to write myself—without a ghostwriter. I had two amazing writing mentors along the way who pushed and empowered me to do the work myself. I’ve always been fascinated with storytelling, and have told many a story through images and interpretation in the world of glamour. But I found that I equally love the world one can create with words. I had taken a few writing classes while at NYU, but, at that time, I ultimately decided I had other passions I needed to explore first and decided to jump into the world of images and fashion. At 47, completing my first novel has become the most fulfilling project I’ve done in my career.
Cheers,
Jay

That's the word that kept pinging in my head when I read the last sentence of Jay Manuel's The Wig, The Bitch & The Meltdown.
It's hard to believe it’s his first novel because it reads like a well-written made-for-television script. The pacing is fantastic, quip after witty quip - chuckle after hearty chuckle.. There’s tension, terror and major train-wrecks! One moment I'm weeping and calling my therapist, the next I'm cackling at Thee Best Shade and characters reading or being read for filth … The library was Oh.Pee.Eee.En!!!
The Meltdown reads like a comedically stealth thriller/amusement park ride! Manuel wrote the main character, Pablo Michaels, in the beautifully aesthetic mirror image of who we've come to know as the world renowned Mr. Jay - sharp, quick witted, shot calling, "fixer" - yet with such vulnerable approachability, the reader slips comfortably into his world of high fashion A-Listers, models, moguls and wannabes.
Manuel is smart and nimble with his pen. You feel transported right into the rooms, sets and locations where the episodes unfold.
And just when you think you're the “high and mighty voyeur” sitting in judgment of the characters' voices and choices, you find yourself swept up in their plight and journey. That's the beauty of selfless writing. Staying true to the characters, no matter how warped or heroic, they're all laced with the human condition.
The beauty of The Meltdown is that even though I had an emotional breakdown at the critical reveal I was flawlessly entertained and had the best fricking ride of my life, periodT.
I hope Jay Manuel has more where The Meltdown came from. This book should be adapted into a major cable network television or streaming series. It’s totally binge-worthy. I give it a solid 5 stars AND 10's across the board!

Jay Manuel stresses he wrote the book himself rather than hire a ghost writer. For a first novel by a non-writer, he has done a great job. I found the story engaging, suspenseful, and heart-wrenching. I appreciate how he dug deeply into his own pain, frustrations, and insecurities so our hearts could ache or rejoice along with Pablo's. A ghost writer could never have accomplished that, and I'm glad he had the wisdom to realize it.
I do wish Mr. J had hired a professional editor to go over the last couple of drafts, just for sake of skill and techniques...to catch those pesky, misplaced commas or the apostrophe-s when writing plural, or some overdone and unintentionally hilarious phrases, such as "bashful shyness" and "dumbfounded shock." But, all things considered, the book is well-written and fun to read. I hope he plans to write another.
