John Sampson continues to sharpen the contrast between the noisy agitprop of his former band Propagandhi and the low-key melodicism of his current one on this, the Winnipeg-based Weakerthans third full album. Forcefully literate (Sampson spent time between his two musical projects writing and launching a small publishing business) yet wed to a coolly urgent alt-pop musical sense that nicely underplays his self-conscious musings on personal obsessions that variously take in the title track's introspective impressionism, the poisonous nature of nostalgic, ritual cronyism on "Psalm For the Elks Lodge Last Call," and the acoustic poison-pen letter to his native Winnipeg, "One Great City." Propelled by a straightforward, occasionally jangly electric guitar assault, yet lightly seasoned with deft horn touches, pedal steel and simple harmonies, it's an album that's smart at every level. --Jerry McCulley

- Reviewed in Canada on September 26, 2003I have never loved three consecutive albums by any band as much as The Weakerthans three releases. The only string of albums by one band that even comes close in my mind is Bad Religion in the late 80s with "Suffer," "No Control" and "Against the Grain." But The Weakerthans blow those three releases out of the water. Simply beautifully crafted, poetic, harmonious music and lyrics.
I, like a previous reviewer, was nervous upon picking up "Reconstruction Site." The band had left G7 Welcoming Committee to join Epitaph. Nothing against Epitaph at all, but change can sometimes be bad. Not in this case. Basically, more people will get to hear The Weakerthans now. And, while I don't want to see them on MTV anytime soon, some recognition in the United States for this amazing Canadian foursome wouldn't be a bad thing.
They are also a tremendous live band. I just caught them in Austin on Monday night (09/24/03), and they had the audience captivated for an almost-two-hour set. They played a great mix of new and old, only leaving out one song I really wanted to hear, "Psalm For The Elks Lodge Last Call." I'm not going to try to nail them down into one category, because their songs jump all over from punk to country to folk to slam poetry to straight-ahead rock 'n' roll.
I picked up a copy of The Weakerthans "Fallow" a few years back because it had a cover of "Anchorless," originally done by singer John Samson's previous band, Propagandhi. Samson had always been my favorite part of Propagandhi, and since he left I haven't really liked their efforts. Luckily I can still hear Samson on The Weakerthans, because he truly is a musical/lyrical genius.
Not to take away from the remaining members of The Weakerthans, because they are all fine and multi-talented musicians. Their timing and stage presence make the band the complete package that it is. Well, I'm rambling and I think my point has been made. A superb band, live and recorded. All of their albums would make my top 10 list, if I ever get around to writing one.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 6, 2003I fell in love with The Weakerthans the first time I heard "Everything Must Go" (Alternative Version) on the SubCity sampler. Left & Leaving was one of my favorite albums, but when I heard they signed to Epitaph, I feared the worst for John & the guys. Thankfully I was wrong.
While Reconstruction Site is more upbeat (musically) and not quite as melancholy as Left & Leaving, it can more than hold its own against their previous masterpiece. The more I listen to it, the more I am convinced that this is their best work to date. Ranging from punk flavored folk to alt. country to straight up rock, this latest effort by this fabulous Winnipeg group is musically diverse and lyrically sound.
Speaking of lyrics, John K.'s lyrics are as poignant as ever and the vocals are perhaps the best he has ever laid down. He (and the rest of the band) seem to have benefitted greatly from the extra money that was surely pumped into this thing by Epitaph. Nice & clean sound, but not overproduced.
Overall I would say that this is a definate must if you are a weakerthans fan and if not, it's most certainly worth a look. Heck, I might go as far as calling it album of the year...of course the new (and final) Strummer cd comes out this year as well, so we'll have to see about that.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 19, 2004Every once in a while I find an album that reminds me why I love music as much as I do. An album that doesn't fit into any of the neat little niche's we so eagerly apply to modern music. It simply defines itself, and from the moment you put on your headphones and hit play, you know that you're experiencing something truly wonderful. I read a review for this album a few weeks ago that claimed this album "felt important." I can't think of a better phrase to describe what the Weakerthans have assembled on this latest release.
It's country. It's folk. It's pop. It's punk. But more importantly, it's just purely delightful. John Samson's lyrics are strange and quirky, yet insightful and poetic. It's hard to listen to him sing without thinking of a stronger Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service), a comparison that speaks volumes. When Samson's lyrics are laid over the unique blend country jangles, indie plucking, and punk riffs something profoundly catchy is created. This is delectable pop music for the true music fan.
This is an album that belongs in everyone's collection. If you haven't discovered this yet, you owe it to yourself to go out and pick it up. It's wonderful.

Verified PurchaseIf you are looking to purchase this vinyl, you already know this is a great album - this review is of the vinyl itself. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that it is a well-made 180g vinyl. For this price, I was expecting a flimsy disc, but it is very sturdy, and the sound is clean. This is a great deal!
