Product description

Nine seconds into her first studio album since 2002's Blacklisted, and there it is. You can't miss it. The voice. Instantly recognizable and uniquely commanding, it has been uniformly overlooked by the masses and beloved by those who have caught on. And, believe it or not, it gets even better, whether Neko Case is warbling like a porch-swing neighbor to Loretta Lynn ("Margaret vs. Paulene," "John Saw That Number"), pontificating from the spiritual pulpit of Etta James ("Lion's Jaws," "Maybe Sparrow"), or unleashing the high-octane zeal of a power-pop spitfire ("Hold On Hold On," "The Needle Has Landed"). Her uncanny, often eccentric lyrics have always been delivered with an inherent passion behind the impulse, but rarely have they approached the boldness of these dozen--many of which were inspired by generations of tales from her Ukrainian ancestors. As usual, Case's industry running buddies collaborate to make the sounds behind her, from Calexico to Howe Gelb of Giant Sand to the Band's renowned Garth Hudson. Still, it all comes back to the voice, that serenading urgency that asks in the title song, "How can people not know what beauty this is?" Yes, there are some to ask, how not? --Scott Holter

Not sure about what the other reviews are saying but for me this is so special. It's like at the roadhouse in Twin Peaks and Juliee Cruise just got off stage and what is next on is this, it has that lost in time sound that is so hard to place. So in my imagination this would be it the follow up to Juliee. There is this total 1950's sound to this that makes it very unique. A very worthwhile disc to check out if wanting something a little on the edge. It also reminds me of Mary Margaret O'Hara as well which is a good thing.

When bringing up Neko Case, I'm always asked to describe her music. Well, I guess its country...sorta. But I'm not talking about pickup trucks or half-baked pop songs dressed up with pedal steel guitar.

Yes there are images of Americana, lives marked by daily struggles, and broken hearts. But the subjects of Neko's songs are just as likely to be murdered on the interstate or to lose three fingers at the cannery.

In fact, her best songs evoke a dark, almost menacing vibe. All carried by her classic country voice - effortless and perfect. The first three songs of this CD are exactly that. Dark, intelligent and uniquely Neko Case. There is no confusing her work for some else's. 'Hold On, Hold On' (backed by The Sadies) is worth the price of the CD alone. Truly one of the great country songs of any era.

The rest of the CD is a little hit and miss. The misses aren't awful, they just left me a little flat even after repeated listens.

In summary, the high points on this CD represent some of the best work she has ever done and will keep us coming back for more. But 'Fox Confessor' isn't quite up to 'Furnace Room' or 'Blacklisted' standards as a complete album.

I bought the cd for the third song, Hold On Hold On, that song is worth the price of the whole cd. Beautiful voice, good music, nice to have something different to listen to for a change. I am not pleased with the packaging, it fell apart when I opened it, the cover wasn't glued on properly. Its disappointing when that happens so I am writing this to see if others have the same problem that I had.

    「Fox Confessor Brings the Flood」

I had never heard of Neko until a mag. compilation album included a track from this album.

I was drawn by the voice which just demands you listen.

The music is alt. rock country. A combination that works very well and the style is something that i feel will become very popular.

Neko is a name that will become very well known, and this album is the one that should do it if there is any justice.

I will definitely be delving into her back catalogue.

Buy this album, you will love it!

There are no bad tracks on this album. No 'fast forward' moments. FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD is a classic album, just like BLACKLISTED. It is rare for any artist to produce one such album in their career - let alone two. Well done, Neko.

I only discovered Neko's music a few months ago, after randomly hearing "I Wish I Was The Moon", and immediately Googling the lyrics to find out who it was. I immediately ordered BLACKLISTED through Amazon. I was totally and completely entranced with BLACKLISTED and spun it dozens of times over the next month or so.

Next I ordered FURNACE ROOM LULLABY and FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD, both of which arrived the same day. I put on FRL first and was mildly disappointed ; great sounding album, nice songs - but it didn't grip me like BLACKLISTED. Expecting to be disappointed further, I put in FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD.

Within the opening 30 seconds of MARGARET VS PAULINE, I knew I was going to like this album. It was an odd song lyrically, different sonically from what I'd heard before. Less of that country-ish feel of the previous albums, but sharp & clean & full of interesting sounds. The story it told had some depth and intrigue and started my imagination working on constructing an image of this Margaret and Pauline.

On STAR WITNESS I was enjoying the vocal and sussing the lyrics out, when the "Hey when she sings, when she sings, when she moves like she runs, moves like she runs" part came in my ears really perked up. Such a great, hummable, memorable chorus (if that is what it is). Really nice, beautifully done. HOLD ON, HOLD ON starts off sounding like it could have come from BLACKLISTED, and then the chorus hits you know this should be the 'single' from this album. Perfect. And I love the lyric "I leave the party at 3am, alone thank God"! I get a laugh from that every time. And MAYBE SPARROW is another standout that you instantly know is going to be great. My favorite may be THE NEEDLE HAS LANDED; I love the intrigue of the lyrics and the imagery, as well as the great pop sensibilities.

    Great album - buy it!

This is one of my favourite albums and it's great to have it on CD. The design of the packaging and the CD itself is very pretty, however, the case breaks down easily and the inner sleeve that holds the booklet ripped almost instantly.
