3.0 out of 5 stars will take you by surprise, Oct. 9 2006
This review is from: Rosemary's Baby (Widescreen) (DVD)
even tho this movie is very dated now, with the young sixties couple, and the wife subservient to the husband and wanting nothing from her life but a baby to be fulfilled as a woman, its still worth watching. mia farrow turns in her usual fey otherworldly performance as rosemary. shes a bit too innocent and naive, but you still root for her. john cassevetes turns in a competent performance as the ambitious husband who is literally willing to sell his wife to the devil to achieve his ambitions. what makes this movie is the great cast of old time supporting actors and the movie sets. guy and rosemarys apt is to die for!!i think they shouldve shown the babys face at the end when rosemary looked at him/it, but i still watch the movie and enjoy it.the mixing of ordinary everyday stuff with absolute horror is masterful and rosemary looks like a deaths head at certain points in the movie.but i found myself wanting to shake her and say wake up, you know somethings wrong, get the heck out of there...

4.0 out of 5 stars a thoroughly good time, Oct. 9 2006
this is one of the best movies ive seen. kathy bates just walks away with the whole picture, as she does in everything ive ever seen her do.shes so over the top in this character that you find yourself wondering what the heck shell do next.james caan turns in an understated performance, giving kathy first place and room for her characted to develop into what it does.well worth watching and owning as are fried green tomatoes and delores claiborne.

4.0 out of 5 stars an engrossing watchable movie, Oct. 9 2006
This review is from: The Sixth Sense (Bilingual) (DVD)
a friend lent me this movie to watch. i wanted to see it but not being a big bruce willis fan did not expect much.however, i found myself absorbed from beginning to end, and the ending was a complete shock!! i was blown away!!im a big fan of m night anyway and own several of his movies. haley joel osment was a bit too cutesy as the kid who sees dead people but this movie is worth watching for the ending alone and for the peek into m nights ever creative brain...none of his movies that ive seen have ever disappointed me.

5.0 out of 5 stars truly chilling, Oct. 9 2006
This review is from: Deja Dead (Mass Market Paperback)
ive read quite a few of kathy reichs books and this, her first outing with her character temperance brennan is by far the best. i love brennans take no prisoners/take no crap attitude and the last two chapters scared me so i got up to check the locks on the doors!! like the dust jacket says,"bring the dog in, lock the doors, read with lights on and dont be alone". unfortunately none of the subsequent books in this series that i have read are quite as good as this one, esp after she falls for the cop. he irritates me to death and she seems to lose her edge after pairing up with him. worth owning, but the other ones, id say take out at the library.

4.0 out of 5 stars a bloody good time, Oct. 9 2006
This review is from: From Hell (DVD)
this movie was better than i thought it would shows unerringly the squalor and terror of east end london in the eighteen eighties and how these conditions could spawn such a monster as jack the ripper. johhny depp gives an overall good performance as aberline, although he seems a bit out of it/sleepy/stoned whatever....the ending was a pleasant surprise after so much violence filth and squalor but a bit sad because i was hoping mary and aberline would get together but they never did. still worth a second look tho.

3.0 out of 5 stars a wasted life, Oct. 9 2006
this movie wasnt as good as i thought it would be.the thing that saves it is charlize therons bang on performance of scuzzy dumpster diver aileen. i would like to have seen more of what made her who she was/the way she was.the a&e biography of the real aileen is far better.kudos to charlize tho who is very very talented and just keeps getting better and better

4.0 out of 5 stars sean penn steals the show, Oct. 9 2006
This review is from: Dead Man Walking [Import] (DVD)
ive seen this movie several times, and as he usually does, sean penn walks away with this movie. as the doomed murder he brings an intensely complex character to life. there was nothing whatsoever likeable about this man and yet....there was something fascinating about him that drew me in. susan sarandon is adequate as sister helen. i found myself sort of hoping he wouldnt be executed but he really made me wonder what is buried in each person under the layers of so called civilized behaviour.well worth watching and owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars the scariest movie ive ever seen, Oct. 9 2006
This review is from: L'Exorciste (The Exorciste) (DVD)
i didnt see this when it originally came out but one night a few years later it was on tv in "prime time" so i tuned in thinking it would have to be heavily edited to be on at that time of night. wrong!! i was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time, and when linda blair spit that pea soup at the priest i jumped out of my seat!! i had a stranglehold on my husbands arm to the point he had nail marks the next day and even now years later i wont watch that movie alone.whew!! just thinking about it gives me chills.

4.0 out of 5 stars a thoroughly spooky movie, Oct. 8 2006
i watch this every time it comes on tv.rebecca de mornay steals the show as the psychotic "babysitter from hell"peyton...and the mixture of everyday family life and unspeakable vicious acts are flawlessly done.annabella sciorra is lackluster as the mother but the rest of the cast makes up for it, including an impossibly beautiful julianne moore, and ernie hudson who gives a bang on performance as the mentally challenged handyman who saves the family.its a bloody good time and a darn good scare.anyone who likes horror movies should have this one in their collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars watchable but miscast, Oct. 8 2006
This review is from: Bonnie & Clyde (DVD)
having a long time fascination with bonnie and clyde, i first saw this movie when it came out in has some nice details, the windswept, depression era southwest, and the costumes, but dunaway and beatty are too old for the parts, gene hackman is too everyday guy and estelle parsons, as blanche is woefully miscast. when the real blanche barrow saw the movie she said estelle" made her look like a horses ***" and i agree. michael j. pollard is really the one bright spot in this movie as c.w. the kid trying to act so tough but who is just a scared little boy underneath. and the death scene was far too picturesque, bonnie falling oh so gracefully out of the reality, clyde barrow was killed instantly with one shot to the head and bonnie was shot to ribbons, execution style while she sat helpless in the car, screaming in terror, and it took her a good five minutes to die. a far better movie is the 1997 tv version starring dana ashcroft and tracy needham.or better yet if you want the real no frills straight up story get a dvd of the excellent A&E biography of the couple
