5.0 out of 5 stars THE SIMPLE TRUTH, Aug. 24 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This tight and well paced film carries a message that, in todays world, is even more relevant. Look past the sparkling performances
of Anthony Quinn, and the underestimated Oskar Werner and David Janssen. World weary dialog delivered in a deft fashion in a
glorious setting... Rome. A simple man rises quickly to the Papacy and is confronted by obstructive and self serving people and
situations. The new Pope must decide if it is to be "business as usual" or will compassion and human decency finally prevail.
Anthony Quinn's character is an amazing parallel to the mind set and honorable life that Pope John Paul I lived. And we all know
what happened to him, don't we?
"When I preach compassion for the poor, they call me a saint. When I do something about it, they call me a communist" John Paul I

5.0 out of 5 stars SADLY, TOO CLEVER FOR MOST, Aug. 22 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
No car chases, boobs shaking or a sullen "hero" waving a gun around. That's right, you've got to use your head here... God forbid!
This incredible movie is about friendship, honor, dignity and simply doing the right thing. Standing up to oppression and winning.
The tempo is spot on, the writing is clever, the directing is perfect and being filmed in black and white is appropriate. But one thing
about this film towers over everything else... the acting. Everyone is well cast and gives "Oscar" worthy performances, especially
David Strathairn (nominated for Best Actor and surprisingly lost to Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) in 2005)

1.0 out of 5 stars MISCAST DISASTER, March 25 2012
Anxiously awaited this movie, especially with (the great) Gary Oldman in the lead role.
Truly loved the B.B.C. version but approached this version with an open mind hoping
to be delighted with this interpretation but what a lousy production on countless levels.
Casting was way off the mark, truly a waste of some top talents here. Tempo was so
slow that it became an issue throughout this movie. Climax of the film was laughable
and left you dangling (not anxiously, just bored) with a taste of true disappointment.
If you want to see this production done to perfection view the B.B.C. interpretations
produced in two magnificent series "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" 1979 and it's amazing
sequel "Smilely"s People" 1982. Watch these gems and see how it's done right!!

5.0 out of 5 stars SETS THE STANDARD, March 20 2012
This review is from: I, Claudius (DVD)
Everything produced after "I, Claudius" is mere child's play in compare. If you're intelligent, savvy, well read and possess a true
appreciation for movingly acted and scripted drama look no further. The B.B.C. usually produces amazing series such as "The
Duchess of Duke Street", "Danger UXB", "Prime Suspect"... well the list just goes on and on. But this fabulous drama raised the
bar to heights that no one else has attained, and probably never will!
P.S. I forgot to place on my list another wonder by the B.B.C., "Our Friends in the North"
I urge all that read this review (both of you) to watch the other series listed. They are all magnificent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A JOURNEY TO THE STARS!!, Jan. 2 2012

This review is from: Vivaldi: Four Seasons (Audio CD)
If you're looking for the ultimate version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, look no further. Most interpretations of this masterpiece are adequate and technically
correct. But Mr. Kennedy offers you a joyous experience that will leave you gasping in awe. While other violinists "suffer for their craft" while performing,
Mr. Kennedy smiles, interacts with his fellow artists and audience, while all the time displaying unmatched enthusiasm and joy for Vivaldi's stunning composition.
Your spirits will soar and your emotions will dance while Mr. Kennedy's leads you on a path of sublime bliss with the ultimate destination being... HAPPINESS!!
