Even Keel: Life On The Streets Of Rock & Roll

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe only for Keel fans? Maybe not., July 9 2016

Does Ron Keel deserve a book written about him? Probably not. His band Keel had a few minor hits in the 80's heavy metal heyday, but never attained superstardom. They did play arenas, but only as openers, not headliners. They were just one of a many slew of bands who were hastily signed in the excessive 80's, only to become faceless and unmemorable acts as the music industry oversaturated itself with marginal music progenitors. Before I come across as a basher, I did own the first two Keel albums, and played a couple of their songs in high school cover bands. And, I love to read, so this is why I bought the book. It is an interesting read, but only for the sake of seeing someone struggle and claw his way to putting a band together in the hopes of getting signed, recording albums, and touring the world. It's compelling enough. I can't see anyone who doesn't know who Ron Keel is becoming enthralled with his story, and that is a shame. It is a slice of Americana, the American Dream being chased by an ambitious young man who doesn't know the meaning of the word quit. If you're a reading fan, and enjoy hearing people's stories, you'll like the book. If you're a heavy metal or Ron Keel fan, you'll like the book. He comes across somewhat delusional, but that can be expected when you've toured the world and had people falling over themselves to get close to you or have people waiting on you. As an example, he claims that he and Yngwie Malmsteen's careers have followed similar paths, with Yngwie blazing a trail for all neo-classical guitar shredders, and he himself bridging that important gap between country and heavy metal. Huh? I don't even know where one would start with that, but country music doesn't sit next to my metal riffs in my audio collection. But that's a minor detail in an otherwise interesting story. It's a relaxing read, nothing too heady, a great way to curl up and enjoy some nuggets from the 80's music scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, tons of info, July 6 2016

I admittedly have read almost every book written on Kiss, so yes, you can call me a fan. I avoided this book, for it seemed to be second hand news, without much input from the band members. I was pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information it contains. From Bob Ezrin, to Corky Stasiak and Jay Messina, with countless others, there is some wonderful inside information on how the recording of the album Destroyer went down. From the seeds of ideas that became songs, to the iconic cover art, to the inclusion of a classically trained orchestra that coloured specific tracks, it's all here for your consumption. The book starts off slow, with a history lesson on Casablanca Records and the quiet beginnings of one Bob Ezrin, then known for turning an obscure shock rock act named Alice Cooper into a superstar. But these are not put here without purpose. The author is setting up the story nicely of how a relatively new label and a young upstart producer played such and important role in creating a masterpiece of an album that would become pivotal in the band's success, a career that would span decades. You will appreciate the exhaustive research the author has put into his work. Almost as good as the album itself. The book wraps up nicely with an update and words from all the players involved. I couldn't put the book down, and I see myself reading this book several more times.

Liked this one a lot. Great stories of how things went down in the recording of many classic Rush albums, from the meagre beginnings to the epic masterpieces that were recorded over the years. Every Rush album is detailed, with wonderful insight from the band members themselves and world famous producers. A plethora of wonderful details, from the seeds of an idea to the origin of song lyrics to the album cover concepts, it's all here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, from a very likeable rocker., Nov. 5 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a refreshing read, not your standard sordid tales of rock and roll debauchery. Def Leppard has some stories to tell, and Phil Collen reveals everything you need to know, from joining the band in the early 80's, to the recording of multi-platinum albums with esteemed producer Mutt Lange, to touring the world, and the trials and tribulations the band faced in it's numerous setbacks with key members that would have broken less capable bands. What will impress the reader is Mr. Collen's philosophy on life. A dedicated vegan, non drinker, fitness enthusiast, he's not your typical rock and roller. There are a few snippets of the wild life, as would be expected from a world renowned travelling band of young men. But the message here is more about how grateful they were for the things handed to them, through hard work and dedication, and the vision to become one of the most successful bands of the last 3 decades. A wonderful read, he comes across as polite, self deprecating, and amiable. I will read this book more than once, so many inspiring stories to soak in.

if you're not a fan of the Back To The Future movies, shame on you. If you are a fan of one of the most entertaining trilogies of our time, then you will love this book. Well written, with inside stories from cast and crew. The book flows really well, it is not your typical "Did you know that..."movie facts and trivia book. You can see the author put in a lot of research and spent some painstaking hours lining up interviews with various sources. Very in-depth chapters, from the humble beginnings that started as a seed of an idea, the development of characters, to casting the movies, to the sequels, all the way to the end of the final scene of the 3rd instalment. Many interviews and interesting points of view here, you'll be delighted at the recounting of some of your favourite scenes from different people involved in the film. Excellent insight on all the great special effects, which were cutting edge for their time. I just finished it, and I'm about to start reading it again, as there is so much delightful information to soak in. This book is as entertaining as the movies themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little tablet, kid's love it!, Feb. 15 2012
Bought one of these for our kid's, it turned out to be excellent, so we bought another one for both of them. Now no more fighting over our iPad, or Acer A500 tablet.
Loaded up for them with all the coolest apps (Angry Birds, etc) from the Android Marketplace, and most of them are free!! For those unfamiliar with the Android Marketplace, it's basically the Apple Store online for purchasing and downloading apps for this tablet (again, many of them are free). NOTE: the Ipad has hundreds of thousands of apps available. The Android Tablet Marketplace has mere thousands, but how many do you really need? There's more than enough apps for this tablet to keep the average user happy.
USB connection to connect to your PC, you can load it up with music and movies. Netflix is also available on this tablet.
Feels very sturdy, not cheap or flimsy.
Great tablet, great price!
You can find a case for the tablet, it's actually made for the HP TouchPad, but this tablet fits in it perfectly. You can trim out a small piece on the edges of it to accomodate the volume and USB port. And they're cheap as well, found on the usual online places.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tablet, replaced my iPad, Oct. 10 2011
I love this tablet, I also own an Ipad, and I liked the features that the Acer tablet has over the Ipad.
-Flash video enabled
-USB ports
-HDMI out
-awesome battery life
-Memory card slot for expanding the system memory
I still love the iPad, don't get me wrong. The wife uses it now, I use the Acer Iconia more. I was originally going to get the iPad2, but thought it wasn't much of a step up from the iPad 1, so I thought this would be worth a shot. Glad I did, it's great! Hundreds of apps, compared to thousands for the iPad, but I never really used more than 10 on the iPad, really. Tons of new apps are being added daily to the android "market" (it's like app store for android,) cool games (yes, Angry Birds,) utilities, great selection of free apps, too.
Buy an iPad2 if you want to try it out and have the current trendy gadget, but for a more useful and powerful tablet, try the Acer, it doesn't disappoint.
