4.0 out of 5 stars Good family film., Jan. 29 2004
This review is from: The Rookie (Bilingual) (DVD)
I enjoyed this moview quite a bit. It had a nice cast, likeable characters, excellent music and a terrific story. The movie starts with his childhood just long enough to set the story and then we are re-introduced to the grown up Jimmy Morris (Dennis Quaid), his family and the high school baseball team he coaches. Its impossible not to like and root for him.
On the negative side, it was a bit long and the other weakness is that it did not always convey Jimmy Morris' love of baseball when he undertakes his unlikely quest to the major leagues. While the movie shows his ambivalence in missing his family as he begins his second shot at the majors, it doesn't capture the positive aspect of a man chasing his dream quite enough. Still, it was a nice movie that I have seen a bunch of times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Beautiful Songs, Nov. 25 2003
This review is from: Impossible Bird (Audio CD)
As another reviewer pointed out "True Loves Travels on a Gravel Road" is simply a beautiful song as is "The Beast In Me" heard in an early Sopranos episode, which actually led me to this CD. This CD is more countryish than some of his recent albums and, in my view, has a little less depth and diversity than the Convincer, but its still a great display of Lowe's singing and song-writing talents. This man has been doing great stuff for over 20 years and he is not doing the same schtick over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful album - Lowe has aged mighty gracefully, Nov. 25 2003
This review is from: Convincer (Audio CD)
For those of you remember Lowe, the 80s rocker, The Convincer is quite a change. Lowe remains a talented singer-songwriter, but his new stuff is more grown up, yet there is still an edge there. Lowe further shows of us terrific range with number of diverse offerings from soulful ballads such as Indian Queens to more up tempo poppy sounding songs like She's Got Soul.
Great album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great show, Nov. 22 2003
The first season of Curb was terrific. The second and third were even better. Like Seinfeld, the supporting characters are hilarious and memorable. Also like Seinfeld, there are often several very funny strands that run together in the better episodes. That makes it especially fun to watch more than once, as you don't always remember how everything fit together.
The show is edgier and more cutting than Seinfeld. To many, this is part of its charm, but others find it off putting and uncomfortable to watch. David is not afraid to take chances and occasionally miss, yet the show is still consistently fresh and funny. The show began with a small cult following, but has become an "in" show that more and more people are watching.
Not everyone likes Curb, but to those of us that do, no show is funnier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Has its moments, Aug. 2 2003
This review is from: Road Fever (Paperback)
A generally enjoyable quick read book that has some laugh out loud moments. Cahill tells a fun story about his trip up two continents and gives some insights into the worlds of adventure driving and travel writing. Nevertheless, at times the story drags and gets a little redundant. I would have given it 3 1/12 stars if Amazon let me do it.

A very good CD, particularly if you have young children. McCutcheon's songs are entertaining and diverse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Read, Aug. 2 2003
An enjoyable and sweet story. There are few storytellers as engaging and talented as Pete Hamill. This book harkens back to an earlier time where people of different backgrounds learned about their neighors' cultures without the forced and sanctimonious multiculturalism we see today. It reminded me of the stories that Colin Powell tells of learning to speak Yiddish in the South Bronx. The book also contains an interesting treatment of Jewish mysticism woven into the narrative. One of the best stories that I have read in awhile.
