1.0 out of 5 stars WANT TO TORTURE YOUR FRIENDS?????, May 5 2004
Purchase this DVD and give it to them. This is a stinker from the Disney corporation. DIANE LANE is a great actress but even she is unable to salvage the lame screenplay from staying afloat! Stay away from this horrible long dull film!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not GREAT ~, May 5 2004
This review is from: Calendar Girls (DVD)
This title is a good selection as a rental (you only have to look at it once) than a permanent purchase for your home collection. The film drags. Very slow on several levels. The screenplay is not a succesful attempt at being artsy by those folks at DISNEY.

The Partridge Family were never considered to be a real band (although they did receive a Grammy Nod as best new artist in 1970 for their vocal production). They were fun and unpretensious. The main problem with BACKSTREET BOYS and this CD is that this group started to believe their own hype. This CD did help murder (THANK GOD) the boy band sound! Place this in the discount bin beside your OTOWN. It is laughable to think a so called music critic from these boards believes JOHN LENNON could learn something from this prefab band! The BEATLES are still not considered dated after 40 years ~ The BACKSTREET BOYS were dated one month after this CD shipped to retail.

5.0 out of 5 stars TRIBUTE ~ A GREAT POP VOCALS CD ~!, May 2 2004
This review is from: Tribute (Audio CD)
I consider this CD to be VOCALLY one of the best full length recordings from the catalogue of MELISSA MANCHESTER. The CD is timeless and the perfect background mood music when entertaining friends. On this CD, Manchester demonstrates her unique gift. She vocally KNOWS HOW TO DELIVER THE MEANING AND EMOTION OF LYRICS. Often, we are blown away by the vocal technique/acrobatics. We often forget to notice if the artist touched us by conveying the message of the song. MELISSA will touch you with this CD. It is one of the best POP VOCALS you can find ! Worth purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go on a GREAT ROAD TRIP with MANCHESTER !, May 2 2004
MELISSA MANCHESTER delivers a great CD for diehard fans. After numerous years absent, she emerges back from the studio with a CD brimming with the production formula best suited for her warm vocals (a fresh 70s acoustic /piano sound). WHEN I LOOK DOWN THAT ROAD has an added new ingredient into the MANCHESTER musical mix; MATURITY! MELISSA is a pure vocalist destined to flourish artistically with the passing of time. If you really appreciated her musical instincts to create meaningful pop/ballads (Don't cry out loud, Midnight Blue, Looking Through The Eyes Of Love) don't pass up the chance to audition the great tracks on this CD. This CD will be TIMELESS in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY BEST OF EAGLES is an almost the best of the 70s., May 2 2004
The collection of EAGLES material found on this compilation is intense. If you do not own another CD by the EAGELS then without any hesitation, purchase this one. It'll provide you with a solid idea of the sound that dominated AM TOP 40 radio in mid seventies. Most real fans will already own the material (with the exception of HOLE IN THE WORLD).

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE of the CLEAREST FEMALE POP VOCALIST~, April 30 2004
If you grew up in the 1970s, you'll be aware of HELEN REDDY as a pop vocalist. During that decade, she hosted THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and was frequently a guest on the major talk shows with JOHNNY CARSON, MERV GRIFFIN, and MIKE DOUGLAS. She even appeared on film (playing a nun in AIRPORT 75) and was nominated for an OSCAR for her rendition of the title song in PETE'S DRAGON. Her vocal styling made an impact on the pop sound for female vocals in the early part of the 70s. She won a Grammy for her anthem; I AM WOMAN thus becoming a part of 70s pop culture. This compilation combines two of her strongest albums; the Grammy winning I AM WOMAN and the chart successful LONG HARD CLIMB. The CD is an educational experience in "the sound of the 70s". Pure pop that could be mellow! This CD should be considered as an "add to collection" for all serious collectors.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOTE TO OPRAH: Stick to book reviews!, April 30 2004
KARAOKE, KARAOKE, KARAOKE. You'll get more musical satisfaction for your money by going to the local run down bar on Karaoke evening with a carload of friends. The adults on this CD such as Lorenzo Owens shine at times but the overall talent level is far from being notable. OWENS does provide nice vocals to his solo yet does nothing new to make the Stevie Wonder classic shine. JACKIE PERKINS attempts to tackle a DEBORAH COX song and ends up sounding like a discount version of PEBBLES. The sentimental favorite, LASHELL GRIFFIN, does perform a nice mature version of a HOUSTON ballad but the musical arrangement is weak and at best a standard KARAOKE BACK TRACK for the song. JOE HERZOG, LEE McGINNIS and THERESSA RUPPERT are all descent amateurs at best. This CD was a nice concept to generate ratings for the daytime show, but a massive mistake as a recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars DID SEASON 3 HAVE A STRONGER CROP OF. . . . T A L E N T ? !, April 29 2004
In the past, I did not admired the weak quality of musical production supporting previous AMERICAN IDOL GROUP CD releases. The blatant commercial attempt by BMG to cash in on national pride during season two was done in poor taste and was very tacky. Season 2 produced several CD group releases that were more embarrassing than musical. What a difference a year can make! I auditioned this product with a great deal of skepticism. I was surprised. GEORGE HUFF and his three DIVAS (JENNIFER HUDSON, LATOYA LONDON and FANTASIA BARRINO) record superb solo efforts. HUFF is destined to become a major tour de force on the R/B chart. I was also impressed listening to the recorded quality of the vocal performances from the weaker contestants; MATT; JON PETER and that 16 year old tone deaf JOHN STEVENS. On this CD they deliver credible performances when placed under the guidance of a solid producer armed with PRO TOOLS. The beauty behind this project is the strong musical arrangements. The musical talent on this CD surpasses last year's overall collection (with the exceptions of Rueben, Clay and powerhouse Kimberley Locke). The production on the new CD is superior.
This CD will please ardent fans of all ages and may surprise a few older skeptics such as myself! You don't need to be a fan of the show to enjoy this CD. JENNIFER HUDSON's vocal delivery on her solo is pure musical perfection... Could there be another JENNIFER HOLLIDAY in the making?

5.0 out of 5 stars UNDERNEATH all the promotional hype. . . .it's GREAT music !, April 28 2004
This review is from: Underneath (Audio CD)
UNDERNEATH may not be the ideal product to instantly please the avid HANSON fan but it's the perfect product to bring new converts into the church of HANSON. The entire project is a strong positive departure from their previous bublegumish material.
If you like strong pop/rock vocals then I suggest purchasing this CD. Album tracks such as "CRAZY BEAUTIFUL" are not as cute as their previous releases. CRAZY BEAUTIFUL surpasses the musical quality of their previous tracks as it aims to hook a more mature audience. The lead vocals on this track loosly pays tribute to the legendary vocal styling of BONO. It also blends thight harmonies with a strong horns section influenced by the early rock era of "CHICAGO".
Overall, the majority of the material on this CD is pop yet with a serious twist of maturity.
HANSON prove with UNDERNEATH that they have a sharp knack for being perfectly one step ahead of musical trends.
Based on the quality of this release, the band HANSON can permanently seal shut their chapter as a cute bublegum heart throb band and label themselves as a true pop/rock band. This release concentrates on developing musical maturity via a solid musical production.
This is a CD that all could own (not just their avid fans) !
The depth of the material on UNDERNEATH is closer to resembling the musical direction of R.E.M. than O-TOWN. The added acoustic emphasis is a plus. They blend tight Crosby Still Nash harmonies on such tracks as BELIEVE (it's not the CHER anthem).
HANSON can be assured that they'll be around for a long time to come. This CD is worth purchasing. You'll be impressed !
