5.0 out of 5 stars Great for adult literacy learners, Nov. 28 2011
This review is from: Home Invasion (Paperback)
Purchasers of this book should be aware that it was written specifically for adult literacy learners. Joy Fielding has a great interest in improving adult literacy, and she wanted to write a story that would encourage reading for those who are weak or disinterested readers. The story, therefore, must be short, simply written, and have a riveting storyline. This book is not for Joy Fielding's mainstream fans, but if those fans know someone whom they would like to encourage to read, they may want to buy this book as a gift. Let's hope that more mainstream authors take Joy's cue and write books for those who struggle with literacy. As a teacher of adult literacy learners, I am happy to offer this book to my students. The story is fast-paced and the vocabulary is direct so that readers' interest is maintained; the end result is that these readers will be encouraged to read more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Highlights of Greek History, April 28 2011
This is a good overview of the highlights of Greek history, particularly if you are either someone who plans to travel to Greece and wants a general idea of its history, or if you just want a brief "refresher" on Greek history. The focus is on Athens, however, not all of Greece. The narrator is excellent, visuals are excellent, and there is sufficient repetition of key names and points that it is easy to remember. The documentary includes the rise of Athens as a political and economic power, the origins of democracy and the Olympics, the Battle of Marathon (against the Persians) and the relationship of Athens to its Greek neighbours, especially Sparta. Athens' contribution to philosophy, art, literature, and architecture are also featured....although too briefly.

I enjoyed this documentary. I'd like to see something similar on Roman history.
