5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Story, Jan. 4 2012
This review is from: A Quebec Jew (Paperback)
Anyone interested in Canadian or Quebec politics, not to mention Israel and the Jewish community, needs to get this book.

A really well crafted, endearing look into the life of a former Catholic Bloc MP from Quebec City who discovered Israel. In so doing, he discovers his own spiritual path - which takes him all the way from conversion to Judaism to leading activist in the Canadian Jewish community. An unlikely and fascinating journey.

Contains great facts and anecdotes on Canada's historic Jewish community and the Canada-Israel relationship. In particular, his sections on why and how Israel is held to a unique set of standards than other countries is a clear and nuanced examination of a complex issue.

Marceau bucks all stereotypes and refuses to be slotted into simplistic categories. This is never more evident than when he identifies himself as a "pro-Palestinian Zionist" - someone who believes that the Jewish people have a right to exist in the state of Israel, alongside a peaceful and independent Palestinian state.

A phenomenal story and great read. Quite accessible, regardless of one's level of background knowledge. Highly recommended.
