5.0 out of 5 stars Attacking embedded systems with an automotive slant, April 6 2016
Well rounded tour of various car hacking / embedded hacking techniques. While I've done a lot of embedded work before I haven't done much automotive, so was very pleased with the level of detail regarding the automotive systems. Lots of overviews of various interfaces (CAN, etc) along with some practical examples of tool usage to get started.

This is a great book as even makes an interested read if you aren't immediately planning on doing a bunch of car hacking, but interested in what sort of security (or lack of) exists on the embedded computers that are woven around our world. It also includes a nice range of attacks, even including examples of things you can run in a simulated environment. It's hard to find books that nicely cover such a wide spectrum ranging from "get your hands dirty with some software simulation" up to "build this custom test-bench with parts pulled from a junker car", but Car Hacker's Handbook has examples of both.

Anyone from automotive enthusiasts interested in more advanced mods to embedded designers would find interesting & useful material in this book [full disclosure - I helped design one of the tools mentioned in the book, but there's no kickbacks, I really did just enjoy the book!].

5.0 out of 5 stars But now its so intuitive and easy to scroll, Jan. 12 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Switched from a Trackman Marble (10+ years) to this - took a little bit getting used to, but after about 2 weeks it feels much nicer and wouldn't switch back. The scrolling works very well, again took some tweaking of the software to get reasonable responses. But now its so intuitive and easy to scroll, am very glad to have gotten this (compared to something with a secondary scroll wheel).

I used the 'inertial scroll' and 'pointer acceleration' features in the software which seem to give you a good trade-off between speed/accuracy.

EDIT: 6-month update: still holding up just fine, and the scroll feature is great. Have my old trackball setup on another computer right now, and the lack of scroll feature is rather annoying! Once you switch to this one, hard to go back to one without the scroll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dog toy & gift, Nov. 28 2015
Our dog has loved this toy - she isn't too destructive so toy has lasted 2+ years, lots of chewing and throwing around. We've probably given about 6 others as gifts to friends with dogs and have always been a huge success. For more destructive dogs the toy doesn't last too long, but they at least get a rope toy out of it once they outer squirrel has been chewed through. It's the only dog gift we buy now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comes with standard label & roll of label (starter sizes), great overall printer., Sept. 6 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Note this comes with a 'standard address label' and a wide roll of tape (just smaller starter sizes). Hadn't seen that mentioned in the overview.

Anyway it's a great product, I was surprised for the price what you get. Included application seems quite good - used on Win 7 64-bit. Had downloaded the latest version from website along with the address book application, which makes it easy to make just address labels. Has some options for importing contacts, so you can probably get label data from another application if needed (might need to script some conversions depending what you can export).

5.0 out of 5 stars but useful for larger items while still being able to blur ..., July 3 2014
Very low cost setup, performs very well. I'm sceptical of claimed wattage, but it's bright enough for all reasonable uses anyway. Fairly big unit, but useful for larger items while still being able to blur out background. Probably would avoid leaving unit on unattended, as I don't see UL/CSA ratings on anything...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to details of patent claims, even for non-lawyer, Feb. 27 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Most books I've read discussing patents just mention that you should 'see a lawyer', without really giving you an understanding of the nuances of why one should see a lawyer. If you're thinking of filing a patent or even just curious, this book helps you understand the importance of *why* it's so important, and all the ways it could go wrong.

It also helped me fill in a lot of blanks around how patents work, especially w.r.t. the different areas (background, detailed descriptions, claims, etc) and what constitutes the true invention. This is money well spent in terms of knowledge learned, and it helps the book is well written enough to be interesting even to a non-lawyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Python + PySide/PyQt, Nov. 10 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Have been working on a number of fairly complex projects using PySide. Already had a fair amount of experience before picking this book up, and I still learned a ton. Goes through a lot of Python introductions which is great, as a few small things I picked up. Lots of example projects throughout to show you various features.

If you're doing PySide/PyQt projects, you need this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Variety of Useful information on FPGAs, Nov. 10 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As advertised, is a good collection of tips. I use Xilinx & Verilog so fit in well with my design methods... if you don't use either of them will find this book less useful. Either way, some of the tips will be something you'll already know or something you could find via a quick search.

But there is enough useful bits of information to still make it a worthwhile buy, and you can appreciate the condensed nature for that reason. For example had picked this up before doing a design where I wanted to use Partial Reconfiguration, and the quick introduction to it along with some information on the bitstream description chapter made my life a lot easier. Plus gives you some useful tools (such as the bitstream decoder for Virtex 5) on his website.

Would have liked to see more discussion around timing constraints, perhaps future versions will go in more depth!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great with Dell E5420, March 13 2012
Had a single stick of 4GB from factory, could upgrade to 8GB with this. Ran a memory performance test before & after to ensure some small timing compatability wouldn't slow down access speed. Results were great - access speed improved substantially, presumably due to ability to make use of dual channel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and Example of Great Typography, Oct. 26 2011
One thing striked me upon opening the book - it's beautiful. Great care has obviously been spent in layout and typesetting of this book, this is a HUGE incentive to actually read the thing, as it silently proves the importance of proper typesetting. All too often books on typesetting or design look just 'ok' - nothing really that special though, which makes you wonder about the authors experience. For that reason you will also want to make sure you get the dead-tree edition and not an electronic edition (if it even exists)! The book contains lots of examples that would also get lost in electronic I think such as type set at different line spacing, different resolutions, and different sizes.

The book makes both an excellent introduction and reference book. Perhaps there are more advanced books around, but I would say anything more elementary is a waste of money. Not that this book is basic, but simply is written in such a manner that it doesn't require you to know too much.

Is written in a very program-agnostic manner; instead provides the relevant information which you can look up in the reference for your software. Too many books waste space by putting program-specific instructions that are outdated by the time it goes to press anyway, so it's nice he ignores that temptation! The author also occasionally has some choice words for how current programs work, which keeps the book from getting too dry as he doesn't hide his personality.

Great buy, will not regret.
