5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!, Dec 13 2001
This review is from: Midsummer's Night (Audio CD)
Dervish has caught my attention from day one! In September of this year they came all the way from Ireland to my college and my friends and I thought we take a look and see what this band was all about. I was floored!! Cathy Jordan's amazing vocals, the group's obvious talent for any intrument under the rainbow, and their gorgeous melodies, jigs, and reels had me hooked. Although the CD isn't nearly as exciting as their live concert (from which they recieved a standing ovation, of course), it's a must have for any person who enjoys the celtic traditional style, as well as a style with a new and fresh kick to it. I know I'm hooked, why don't you give it a try!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely charming!, Aug. 12 2001
I've seen this movie 3 times on PBS and each time I have been delighted by the charms of every character, be them young or old. The story is set in early 20th century England through the eyes of 3 children. When their father is falsely convicted of treason, the family is forced to move to more meager accomodations, but they are met with open arms by their new neighbors and peers. They are situated near a railway track that is the basis for their adventures, whether it be waving at the 9:15 to send their father their love, helping out a friend on his birthday, or reuniting a Russian man with his missing family.
The people they meet and the incredible and heroic deeds they do make for a wonderful and heartwarming story. This movie is well acted, incredible sweet, and a wonderful show for the whole family to enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie is hard to find, but I found one!, Jan. 28 2001
A truly touching film about 6 friends (not exactly Friends), this independant from 1992 film won my heart. With a brilliant opening scene, and the credits traveling from the last time they were all together in 1982 (with political break throughs and famous people littering the screne set to the great Tears for Fears tune "Everybody Wants to Rule the World") and a brilliant story line, Peter's Friends is once of the best independant films out there. Directed and acted by the great British Kenneth Branaugh with Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry as Peter, and Imelda Staunton, it's no wonder this is such a terrific flick.
Set on New Year's Eve, 1992, each person comes to Peter's estate for one last new years in his house, since Peter's father died. It has been 10 years since they had all been together, performing a small cabaret show to anyone who would actually want them there to perform. Now, all the friends have been married, movied away, or in destructive (or no) relationships. During the course of the weekend, they all rediscover one another as well as discover who they are. With an pwerful script, setting, and cast of characters, Peter's Friends is one of the best. I completely recommend you see it and enjoy yourselves. It's brilliant, so have fun!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most brilliant!, Jan. 28 2001
This review is from: Sirens (Widescreen) [Import] (DVD)
As far and Independant flicks go, I am always a fan through and through, and Sirens tops my list as one of the best. With an amazing cast including my favorite, Sam Neil, and a supporting cast of Hugh Grant as a bumbling preist new to a Bohemian style Australia, Tara Fitzgerald as his wife, Portia de Rossi, Elle MacPherson, and Kate Fischer as the models of Norman Lindsey, this movie is stunning visually and mindboggling at the same time.
Set in the early part of of the 20th century, Sirens is the story of a young married couple set in the clergy on the way to their new parish in Australia. Along the way they have a mission to talk nude artist Norman Lindsay from posting a religiously offending portrait in a gallery. During their stay, the young wife becomes taken up in this fantasy type of world in which they live, hidden from the ridicule of the nearby towns. This movie, although seemingly pornographic, is beautifully illustrated with the visual symbols of the Bible and the myths and legends of ancient Roman and Greek times. The awakenings that take place in this film are very well done. It's a marvelous movie, and although clearly not for everyone due to the graphic content, I suggest this to any Indy film fan. It's brilliant!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, easy going, Jan. 27 2001
This review is from: Here on Earth (VHS Tape)
I was alone when I saw this movie in theatres last spring, and I was touched, enraged, and sad all at once. Although Here On Earth wasn't the number one tear jerker or romance of the year, I did enjoy myself, and I hope you will too.
Set in a small ruddy town off of a prestigious school campus, it's is very much a Romeo and Juliet type of story, with guy getting involved with a girl on the other, wrong side of town. The characters in the school were hard to get along with, and it makes you wonder why she even fell for the jerk, when in truth I found her own boyfriend a much more loving and sweet character. With many plot twists, and wierd sub-plots, I think the movie could have been a lot better if only they had dropped the sickness she obtains.
On a lighter note, I was on the whole touched by the film. The constant repition of my fave poem Birches set a romantic, playful tone to the story, and the lovely incongruencies kept me watching. I completely suggest this movie for a date with a sensitive guy, so crack out the popcorn and pop in the video. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, Jan. 20 2001
This review is from: Elizabeth (VHS Tape)
A great from director Shekhar Kapur with the amazing talents of Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Joseph Fiennes, Elizabeth is one of the best movies from the 1999 Oscar rush, (deserving the Oscar, but trapped in a very tight race with Shakespeare in Love, yet another fine Elizabethian story line) and wowing me with the outstanding script and direction.
Based on the first years of Elizabeth I reign, every moment and emotion is captured with perfection by each character. Although gruesome at times, the story was very true to most historical documents from the time period. The hardship to keep ones throne, and the bias against women is gently, but deeply outlined by the perils Queen Elizabeth is forced to face. With ease, Kapur brings out the reality of Elizabeth and her England.
A must see with extremely romantic and historic undertones, it is well written and beautifully pieced together. Brilliant!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Playful and intriguing, Portman has done it again!, Jan. 13 2001
My first run in with music by Rachel Portman was through a movie called Sirens, and the outstanding soundtrack, sadly, was out of print. I was mesmerized by the music, and I was addicted to her amazing style. I own the Oscar Nominated The Cider House Rules, a fabulous soundtrack, and I love Bagger Vance and Emma, but this new track is the tops! With varying styles that are from light jazzy pieces that make you feel like dancing, to gentle instrumentals, Portman has taken the prize again! She captures the playful mystery and romance of the movie in every note, and it's captivating. A must have for all instrumental lovers, you'll be playing it over and over again, and never get tired of it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, Jan. 13 2001
This review is from: Billy Elliot (Audio CD)
Billy Elliot, one of the top movies of 2000 in my opinion, deserves kudos for it's actors, script, and characters, not to mention the fabulous music that goes along with it! With playful songs from Brit band T-Rex (Cosmic Dancer, Ride a White Swan), hard core songs like London Calling, and the touching sound clips from the movie, this soundtrack fits in perfectly to the movie. You really can visualize each scene to the music, as well as enjoy it as a separate entity from the film. One of the best this year!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and exciting!, Jan. 12 2001
This review is from: Timeline (Mass Market Paperback)
Books about time travel, especially when using high-tech quantum machines, can sometimes be hard to follow, but this book tops the list as one of the best I've read. Michael Crichton once more has wowed me beyond belief, as well as kept me glue for hour on end with his latest novel, Timeline.
The novel focuses on 3 men and a woman who were all grad students working on a historical site in France. Supported by a mysterious high-powered company, their professor was asked to fly out to their base in New Mexico, and didn't return. Days later the students found a parchment in the professors handwriting during a dig, reading "help me". Whisked to New Mexico, the students were briefed on the situation, that the professor had gone back in time, via a quantum physics machine (the actualy instructions became hard to read at times) and had been lost. They had to go and find him. Fast paced, it almost takes your breath away with the detail of the time period, 600 years ago France. The validity of the information may only go so far, as was proven with the facts in Jurrassic Park, but the novel itself is gripping and dripping with fascinating detail.
I give this my all around thumbs up, a Michael Crichton master piece!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantics, gather round!, Jan. 12 2001
How many of you are hopeless romantics, especially when it comes to timeless love and friendship? Well, I know I am, and this book tops the list of must reads. After reading Beauty, I was enchanted with the amazing style of Robin McKinley, and the way she brought out each character in a new light, and gave even the sisters a human touch. In Rose Daughter, we meet a whole new family of characters, a whole new perspective, and a brand new enchanting tale.
Rose Daughter presents a family torn by loss of money, and loss of a father due to mental illness. The girls survive in a small cottage left to their late mother, a child of nature. The palace in which the Beast resides is amazing, and I am always looking forward to seeing what new surprise will await her.
Read it; it's magical, enchanting, and superbly written, and you're sure to fall in love!
