5.0 out of 5 stars Death at its finest, July 16 2004
This review is from: Meet Joe Black (DVD)
I do believe this is one of the rare movies that every member of the cast gave a stellar performace. But applause must go to Pitt for his portrayal as both Death and the human Joe Black. The subtle changes in his character was performed masterfully. Forlani did well as the youngest daughter of the media mogul Parish, going from daddy's little girl to seductress. But besides it, this movie also raises some deeper issues, like highlighting the small things we take for granted in our everyday life. Do make an effort to watch it, you'll find yourself profoundly touched by it.

Josh Groban has that sort of lovely heartfelt voice that it really becomes irrelevant what he's singing about as long as he continues singing. This CD mainly comprises of love song tracks which play up the full power of his voice. Its a good buy to listen to someone who can really sing in todays music world where I can safely say 80% of the folks out there who record CD's can't. But if you dislike listening to love songs and think its all wishy washy mush, leave the CD alone.

This review is from: Harem (Audio CD)
Its a good CD if you enjoy listening to music out of the box - you know not your usual pop or rock fare. The tunes are well varied from the faster beat Harem to the slower ones like Free. Its also quite soothing. But if you cannot stand music which have no meaning to the lyrics, and which have that sort of haunting tune to it, please leave it on the shelf.
A small grumble tho, the number of tracks are too few...leaves you with the feel you've been ripped off.

2.0 out of 5 stars No. no No no NO, June 8 2004
This review is from: Geisha: A Life (Paperback)
Boring is the word to describe this book. After reading Arthur Golden's Memoir of a Geisha, this book does not even begin to compare with it. Its told in a droll dry monotonous tone that's perfect if you suffer from insomnia and wish for a book to put you to sleep. Unless you relish reading your history textbook again leave this book on the shelf.

Britney britney britney...what is the music world to do with her? She can hold a tune, but her voice lacks the power others have. Which is probably why Christina Aguilera can get away with more.
Her latest effort is a sort of rebellious attempt to get the attention that slipping away from her. Rebellious against the squeaky clean image she was supposed to portray...mind you she's a fine one to grumble, she started the i'm a virgin thing herself. Attention because of the provocative lyrics in her album. doesn't anyone tell her stripping yourself on your video and bumping and grinding around with moans and breathy lyrics does NOT help you get noticed for your talent?
This album gets annoying after the first few songs. Leave it on the shelves where it belongs unless you're a rabid Britney fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ahhh.....the hype, April 16 2004
This review is from: Measure Of A Man (Audio CD)
Sweet little Clay Aiken. Well OK, not so little, he is after all older than me. Everyone loves him, he's the most popular idol ever. He can sing alright. And hold a decent tune. But his voice.............. ahem....well it tends to get a little squeaky at times. Don't throw your rotten tomatoes at me yet you Aiken fans. Basically, his voice isn't anything to rave about. Solitaire is good yes I know, but a more powerful voice would do more justice to it. I feel this CD is getting raves mainly because everyone finds Clay so adorable. The more he doesn't realise (or at least he claims he doesn't) how adorable he is, the more the American public love him for it. And oh girls they just love a guy with a big heart don't they? He helps out disabled kids.
So this is your typical pop or ballad CD. Purchase it if you've fallen spell to Aiken, but pass if you haven't. It won't be a great loss to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad plot, March 1 2004
Well as always, no need to waste time on the storyline but rather jump straight into praises and critisms.
Firstly, the plot is quite a commendable one. Not a lame plot but quite nicely done up with explainations that make some sense. The usual fare is to leave viewers with the questions hanging over their head. However the ending here is rather abrupt. One wonders, is there some Underworld 2 in store? Afterall directors these days seem notoriously fond of waiting to see how the first one fares and if it gets the raves, out comes number two but if it flops they shelve the sequel.
Secondly, lack of chemistry between Selene and Micheal. That is probably the most serious failing the movie has. I mean it is touted to be the equivalent of the gothic romeo and juliet correct? Well seeing Selene abruptly step up and half kiss Micheal really leaves you questioning "Huh? Where did that bit come from?"
Thirdly, whats the deal with all the different accents? Perhaps this is not a serious problem to some but personally I find it weird to hear the British accent and the American accent all co-mingling. There was no mention of Selene being a British vamp or KRaven being from the US....honestly very puzzling.
LAstly, the effects of the movie were top notch. The transformation of the werewolves were good and realistic and they looked good not pathetic namby pamby dogs some movies portray them to be. The scene in which you see Viktor come back to life is good as well. But the scene when Micheal becomes the combination of both word....awful. Honestly, couldn't they have done it some other way?
Oh yeah, ok one last bit [ I know i said lastly already] usually vampires are portrayed as more powerful creatures and the werewolves second rate stupid animals. To an extent that undercurrent runs but however it appears the werewolves have the slight upper hand here over the vampires perhaps due to strength or size....for one I've never seen vampires rely so heavily on guns to the point they are virtually useless without it. All they do is stand around and hiss with their fangs exposed. The only vampire to portray the strrength is Viktor.
However its a worthwhile fare overwall. Watch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, Feb. 21 2004
You really can't get a better example of a cast that cannot act than in this one. I don't think I need to go through what the DVD is about, but rather dive into what is going to be a rather scathing commentary of this DVD. The actress who plays Dr Joyce Reardon is stiff and spends most of the time smirking annoyingly. Somehow she comes across as someone who thinks her acting is top notch when nothing could be further from the truth. That alone is quite enough to ruin everything as she's the main character. Annie the autistic girl, you expect me to believe that girl is autistic?? If you are trying to convey someone who is autistic I would definately suggest you put more effort into the physical appearance of the character. Scary movie? Please. Storyline boring, nothing scary. The 'ghosts' and unnatural phenomenon is too unnatural nobody will believe it. I say stick to writing Mr King. Your effort here is just terrible. And I'm being kind here.

New albums or books by an artist or writer who've had a rave review for their previous effort always make me wonder two things
1. will it be as good as the old one?
2. are all the raves i see for the second time just an obligatory rave influenced in part by the hype from the old album
I wouldn't call this album anything to rave about really. Its her usual method and style, just like in the past album. Peaceful, calming and soothing. In a way, in our hectic world, filled with screaming music, it does make her album stick out, in a good way. Its a good album to come back to and unwind, just before bed, or if you've had a particularly frustrating day. However if you thought her first effort was undeserving of all the Grammy's she won, don't bother with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sound advice, July 15 2003
This book represents all things solid and stable in the world of stock market fluctuations that can turnabout on you in a second. Graham gives good advice that helps to avoid the common errors most people make in the stock market. The only gripe is its a rather droll and dry read. But if you stick through it and finish it, you'll find yourself much wiser.
