Features Available in Kindle Books

Some books sold in the Kindle Store have enhanced features. These enhanced features may not be available on all Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers, or Kindle reading apps.

If you're purchasing a book from your computer's web browser, you can check if a title is available for your Fire tablet, Kindle e-reader, or Kindle reading app by hovering over the Available only on these devices link on the product detail page.

Text Pop-Up

With text pop-up, text will "pop out" on the page when reading a children's book on your device.

On a touchscreen-enabled Fire tablet, Kindle e-reader, or Kindle reading app, double-tap the text to expand it. To return to the book, double-tap anywhere on the screen.

For Kindle e-readers with a 5-way controller, press the 5-way controller to select and navigate between text pop-ups. Press the Back button to return to your book and exit pop-up mode.

Panel View

While reading a comic book or graphic novel, you can magnify panels to read them fully.

On a touchscreen-enabled Fire tablet, Kindle e-reader or Kindle reading app, double-tap any region to see it magnified. To return to the book, double-tap anywhere on the screen.

For Kindle e-readers with a 5-way controller, press the 5-way controller to select and navigate between text pop-ups. Press the Back button to return to your book.

Print Replica

Kindle Print Replica textbooks maintain the rich formatting and layout of their print editions while also offering many of the advantages of standard Kindle books.

Each page in a Print Replica textbook displays words and images in the same position as the corresponding print edition, while adding Kindle features such as annotations and the ability to sync your last page read across multiple Fire tablets and Kindle reading apps. Kindle Print Replica textbooks also have most of the same features as PDF-formatted books, including advanced zoom and pan functions.

Print Replica textbooks will have the words "Print Replica" next to the book title in the Kindle Store.

X-Ray

Select the X-Ray button while reading to find chapters and locations that mention ideas, characters, and important places, as well as background info, biographies, and more from Shelfari and Wikipedia.

X-Ray is available for many titles in the Kindle Store. If X-Ray is available for your Kindle book, you'll see "X-Ray: Enabled" on the product detail page in the Kindle Store. X-Ray is only available for Kindle books in English.

Text-to-Speech

Text-to-Speech is an experimental feature that allows you to listen to Kindle books on your device. If Text-to-Speech is enabled for your book, your device will read the text in the book to you.

Text-to-Speech is not available for all titles in the Kindle Store. If Text-to-Speech is available for your Kindle book, you'll see "Text-to-Speech: Enabled" on the product detail page in the Kindle Store. Text-to-Speech is only available for Kindle books in English.

Text-to-Speech is supported on:

  • Fire HDX (4th Generation)
  • Fire HD (4th Generation)
  • Kindle Fire HDX (3nd Generation)
  • Kindle Fire HD (3rd Generation)
  • Kindle Fire HD (2nd Generation)
