Colourful basic guide
May 4, 2016
This book is packed with information, and pictures and is a great starter guide for those interested in learning about wild foliage.
It has a picture index in the front of the book and the plants are broken down into the following categories: trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, sedges & grasses, ferns & allies, and in the back of the book is a poisonous plant section.
Each plant has its own page with at least one picture or coloured drawing and then a write up which includes food, medicine, other uses, description and a warning where necessary.
It's a good size considering how much information they've packed into it. It's a bit heavy but could fit in a day pack no problem.
This book is ment as a basic guide and not a how to live off the land type book. The information given for each plant is basic but a decent run down and enough to give you a good idea about which parts are edible or medicinal. However, further reserch would be required on how to cook or use the plants to treat particular ailments.
The only thing I would change about this book is more pictures. In particular, pictures of plants in various stages of growth. Sometimes a young plant can look very different from a mature one. Also root pictures of the pants with edible roots and a far away and then a close up of each plant.
Overall I would recommend this book to those who are looking for a good basic guide that covers a very large amount of plants.
