Camco makes a good auto switching regulator
September 23, 2014
Running a fishing lodge the last 25 years and with propane used for hot water and kitchen stoves on every cabin, I have plenty of experience with automatic change over regulators. For the most part, I've not had much trouble with any of the brands other than the indicator fading or discoloring to the point it gets hard to tell when you've got an empty. The trouble typically comes from making rookie mistakes like accidentally using a galvanized pipe fitting when connecting it to the piping. There is a chemical reaction that occurs and goo is then produced inside your lines. Always use brass or black steel fittings and use the yellow teflon tape on the pipe thread fittings. Do NOT however use tape or thread sealer on the 2 top inverted flare fittings where the hoses connect to the brass fittings on the regulator. They are made to seal without any type of sealer! If however, you have pigtail hoses that have pipe thread ends and you need to remove the 2 brass inverted flare adapters, then do indeed use thread sealer when installing them. The other item is to keep an eye out for cracks in the pigtail hoses and replacing those before you run into real trouble. If you have the big hand turn Acme thread connectors, there isn't much to go wrong but if you use the old wrench tighten left hand thread POL fittings, watch out for missing or cracked O-rings is your fittings were so equipped. If necessary in a pinch, I've have taken a cracked O-ring off since it is prone to leak and gone without... just tighten it brass to brass good and tight. After all, some of the POL fittings don't even have O-rings though I always replace my O-rings promptly and keep some spares in the tool drawer. Just keep them away from exposure to the sun... most propane O-rings don't last long in direct sunlight but when installed or in the toolbox, they last a very long time. Anyhow, to sum up by saying that the Camco regulators I have in service work as well as the next brand yet the price here was better so that's what made me buy more Camco.
