Thanks for giving us the opportunity to clarify your inquiry regarding the safety of Belladonna.
There is a substantial difference in the concentrations of botanical Belladonna (the plant extract or mother tincture) and homeopathic Belladonna (concentrations of 3CH, 5CH, 6CH, 9CH, 12CH, etc.). To understand the safety of homeopathic Belladonna one must understand the difference between a plant extraction and a homeopathic preparation:
1. The starting material of Boiron’s homeopathic Belladonna is a hydro-alcoholic extract of Belladonna, in this form the Belladonna solution or extract is called a ‘Mother Tincture’ (MT). The MT concentration of Belladonna is considered toxic. To prepare homeopathic Belladonna from the MT, the MT undergoes a dilution process. To obtain the first dilution, the Belladonna MT is diluted in a ratio of 1 to 100, that is one portion of Belladonna MT to 99 portions of diluent. We call the resulting solution a « 1CH dilution of homeopathic Belladonna ». 2. To obtain the second dilution 2CH, the starting material used is the 1CH solution (above). Here again, this solution will be further diluted using a ratio of 1 to 100. The resulting 2CH dilution is 10, 000 times more dilute than the Mother Tincture (MT).
Belladonna 3CH in Coryzalia has a dilution factor of 1 million compared to the mother tincture. This concentration of Belladonna is extremely low. At these concentrations Belladonna (homeopathic) is considered to present no risk of toxicity to adults or children.
It is also important to note that Homeopathic Pharmacopoeias – recognized by Health Canada and other health authorities – have established the safe concentrations allowed in consumer products for substances such as Belladonna. Additionally, all Boiron products for sale in Canada, including those containing homeopathic belladonna, have been reviewed by Health Canada and bear a DIN-HM (Drug Identification Number – Homeopathic Medicine). During the review process, Health Canada assesses the safety of each Natural Health Product.
We hope this information helps ease any concerns you may have regarding the safety of homeopathic Belladonna. Thank you very much for choosing Boiron. For additional product info please reach out the the Boiron Info Center.
It does work for my son's cold pretty well! He had been coughing for 3 days. Since he's been taking Coryzalia just for 2 days (5 units in total), his cough has almost gone! His runny nose is getting much better as well. He likes to take the medicine from his spoon and doesn't mind the taste.
