Of all the V76 products by Vaughn Grooming that I've been able to try, this has to be—hands down—a winner in every sense!
V76 products have an excellent scent to them, come really well-packaged and the product in the container is generously topped up. I'm not particularly keen on the texture of this paste, but I do see why they'd emphasize the fact that you can remold you hair throughout the day for added effect. And that kind of explains the whole texture issue: it seems to be a mixture of a clay and pomade, but more of a clay...so it gives your hair that wet pomade look and yet maintains an overall matte texture.
This is very good—most modern men hairstyles require matte styling products, and this fits the bill really well. On my own hair, I find that the hold absolutely does not exist...but that's because my hair is coarse and thick, and so if I use extra product I get a very "crunchy" texture to my hair, and if I use too little it doesn't really make any sense to be using any styling product in the first case.
Overall, however, I'd say that if you don't have coarse and thick hair, you should fine this paste to be really good. I wouldn't hold it above a traditional pomade incumbent, like Suavecito or the Rocky Mountain Barber Company's pomade, but for the price and quality—you really can't go wrong here.
Over the past month i've used this molding paste about 20 times now and never once do I need to reapply. I typically apply the paste after a shower when my hair is slightly damp after a towel dry - not soaking wet - slightly damp. I run my comb under some water and comb the product in a little bit sometimes if my hair is too dry. I use a dab the size of my pinky fingernail to style my hair. The paste will get crispy if not thoroughly mixed into my hair, if i try to use it on completely dry hair, or if I use too much. The molding paste itself provides a quality medium firm hold. I still prefer using my Dapper Dan pomade though. I do think hair products like this are very dependant on your personal type of hair and the type of result you're looking for. I personally have roughly 4-6cm of straight brown hair and have naturally thick hair. The paste works well for me and I've got no complaints to bring up. I'm pleased with the results using this molding paste, and would recommend it.
Great molding paste! Even though it's recommended for medium length short hair, my hair was recently cut and is a little shorter than I usually wear it, but this worked very well. If you overuse it, hair will be a little crunchy, so try not to put on too much. However, I found that if I comb my hair through a bit after it 'dries' I get an even nicer texture to my hair. If I don't comb through it gives a really heavy texture that separates and defines hair, but by combing I get a much more smooth, neat texture so it's very versatile.
The only thing I don't love about this is that you have to use it in damp hair, sometimes I only put product in my hair if I go out, so being able to use it in dry hair (instead of showering first) would be ideal.
The smell is described as 'BLUE CEDAR - A magnetic woody scent that is soothing and elegant with leathery accents. Coconut Milk, Nutmeg, Violet, Peach, Blue Cedar Tree, Moss, Leather Accord'
I don't love the smell, it's a little musky and masculine (I don't mind that I often use men's products), but definitely not my fave. I do really love that it isn't sticky or uncomfortably heavy in the hair like a lot of products I've tried. It leaves the hair flexible with a medium level of hold and is a very versatile paste.
I've had short spikey hair most of my life; I mean WILD spikey. I have tried so many pastes and pomades that I wouldn't dare try to count them all. This is the best I've ever tried. It's the kind that once you spread it in your hair it pulls. On my hair it's fabulous but I can normally style my hair with ease so I used a small amount and spread it over my palms, then vigorously rubbed it through my teen son's hair. I used my son for this product because he has the thickest straight hair that resists all styling products, so he makes a fantastic test subject. This paste lifted his hair and kept it up, allowing little spikes and teepees of hair to stand on end. It really did a fantastic job. I found it left his hair with a matte, dull shine not wet or greasy looking. The paste remains semi pliable throughout the day. The scent of this product is interesting to me; it smells like a mens product but not in a traditional way and not so much so that a spikey lady couldn't use it too. I enjoy the scent, I can't see it putting anyone off.
