DOES NOT WORK OUT OF THE BOX, TECH SUPPORT HORRIBLE!!!
February 28, 2019
I bough this CPU and the 'supposed' corresponding Gigabyte motherboard as a new fast server project. Once it all came, I carefully put it together and ... no boot. Three beeps indicating "no video" and nothing else. Internet search revealed the motherboard bios was not the latest version, so no video.
Further searching revealed you go to AMD and "request a boot kit", so I did. They replied the next day, but ***YOU MUST TAKE A PHOTO OF THE CPU SHOWING SERIAL NUMBER AND MODEL***. Well, you cannot do this unless you remove the suppled fan and SCRAPE OFF ALL the thermal compound. Since I have no more compound, this would ultimately leave the cpu "dry". They won't accept a photo of the processor with fan, or of the box - only the cpu showing numbers.
In other words, they have no intention of honoring this "deal" and supplying a boot kit. So I'm left with a CPU and motherboard that won't run, and I can't update the bios because I have no video. Yea, the problem is 99% the motherboard, but this "solution" from AMD just seems like a huge insult.
Looks like both are going back for refund and I'll get something that works... maybe an Intel I7 and motherboard.
EDIT AND UPDATE (several days later). I **FINALLY** heard from AMD. Their tech support tells me this CPU does not have graphics on it, so I must add a separate grapics card to the motherboard to see anything.
THIS WAS NOT CLEAR ON ANY WEBSITE OR PRE-SALES information, unless you "read between the lines" carefully.
In the end I have decided to keep the processor for now and buy a different motherboard (the one I bought had defective USB ports). I also bought a cheap PCI graphics card so I can "see" something.
Still very disappointed in AMD's pre-sales material for not making the distinction clear, and very disappointed in the number of days non-functional waiting for tech support to reply.
ASIDE: another annoyance... you get a free game with the CPU, but you cannot claim the game unless you run the AMD "CPU verification" software. It ONLY COMES in a WINDOWS version. Normally OK I guess, but this was to be a dedicated Ubuntu Linux server, which won't run the verification software. (I have Win PC so could still like the game). Again, disappointing.
(I did bump the rating from 1 star to 3 stars in editing as it does work, just the other issues knock it down from a better rating)
