Was surprised by the value!
December 7, 2018
I have an older vehicle and one day wondered if a backup camera could be added. Upon researching, there seemed to be 2 different price ranges: $300+ and under $100. The sub $100 models interested me most, and I was surprised by the number of features. In the end I chose this model based on: good reviews, 1080p @ 60fps picture quality, night vision, and a larger lcd screen than competitors. A lightning deal brought the price down $15-20 dollars so I jumped on it. Upon arrival, I was disappointed by the basic instructions; the information missing: that an included blue plastic stick is actually a handy tool to tuck away cords, basic instructions on attaching the mirror (you latch the new mirror over your old mirror using a multi squared piece of rubber – which works well despite my initial apprehension), and the scariest part - the wiring, I think it simply says "connect the wire to your reverse light", not great if you are a beginner - I am not very skilled but figured it out through youtube.
What did I think? I’m very happy and surprised by the extra features despite only wanting a reverse camera initially - I get a security camera and a recording camera on the front and rear. The dash cam is a huge benefit that you won’t realize until you need it (my friend just went through an accident that took a year to clear his name – this would have been immediately resolved with video evidence). As mentioned in another review, the mirror does incredibly well at not showing fingerprints even as a touchscreen. The mirror itself is large but it gives you an extra level of rearward vision and does not look weird after it is installed. The rear view camera turns on immediately when you switch into reverse (and adds guidelines like a factory reverse cam (note there is an auto off setting you can adjust for how long the camera stays on after you switch out of reverse). I also enjoy the fact that you have control over the angle of your camera. I was worried about the sensitive equipment being exposed to the elements, but it has handled snow/mud with no effect on function. Another concern I had was whether the DC power would drain the battery (my DC outlet stays on when the car is off), I was looking into purchasing a direct power connect kit and have it hardwired into an accessory fuse, but after a few weeks I noticed there was no effect on the battery (I drive every day, also you can turn of the security camera feature).
Negatives? Here is my list;
1. rear camera is not as good as the front camera: the front camera records at 1080p @ 60fps, what they don’t tell you is that the rear camera is not the same quality level. The rear is definitely not as smooth or detailed as the front camera, since you move slowly, it is not a huge negative, it was just disappointing because all the marketing makes it sound like both cameras are 1080p @ 60fps.
2. Night vision is on the rear camera only: marketing also mentioned “night vision” I was excited to have this on the front so I could use it on the highway as a heads up for any animals in the dark (this is a feature on some really high end vehicles). Unfortunately the front relies on your headlights only (not that great on my car, and definitely misses a lot compared to the rear camera. The rear night vision is really incredible, and makes up for the lack of quality. I’m guessing it came down to cost (I would have been interested in paying an extra $20-30 if this could be an optional night vision front camera.
3. No tilt feature in the mirror: you know when you flip the switch on the base of your mirror when there are bright lights behind you? This doesn’t work on this mirror which is disappointing, there seems to be a basic tint included but it is not the same.
Overall I will still give this a 4/5, the price makes up for a lot of the negatives and my issues with the instructions can be resolved by watching youtube videos. I would have been happy paying the price I did just for the rear camera, so there is not much to complain about! Also, if you put a review they will send you a free memory card (so that is another $15 off the price!).
