After 9 years of playing WoW, it is only in the last year that I have really taken the time to learn about all the lore of the game (always knew the Lich King stuff because... how could I not?). I was entranced - a special thanks to YouTuber Nobbel87 who puts together the best lore videos; check his channel out if you get the chance. The lore is rich and wonderful, adding a depth to the game that makes every questline/area/expansion that much more meaningful. This book, the first volume, introduces the universe of World of Warcraft (not just Azeroth), going back to the dawn of time, explaining the origins of the Old Gods, the Titans, the Dragon Aspects and so much more. It's well written and the art work is lovely. The book leaves off at a particularly interesting and crucial moment in the lore which makes it all the more exciting for the next one. I, for one, am very much looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.
Full disclosure: This is the only Warcraft novel I have ever purchased. I did not play Warcraft 1 through 3. The lore, for me, is new and fresh and I can't wait for more. Those that have understood and been exposed to it before may find it repetitious and tedious. It's their loss.

Take note, this 4 star review is for the digital version and my views on how the story itself is told and presented.
I picked this book up in physical form first and then in digital while it was on sale last year. I am a fan and player of Warcraft and occasionally read warcraft books, so I was looking forward to seeing what was in this. In short, a lot!
I give the book 4 stars because I had a hard time getting through it. The writing was dry but then that is to be expected because it reads like a history book, which is basically what it is. I don't play enough Warcraft to remember all the areas that the book covers but, in the histories, where I did it was certainly enlightening.
I would say this is 5 stars for any serious player of the game from the standpoint of how good the back story of the World of Warcraft is essentially crafted. From a reader’s perspective though it's 4 stars because there is so much to take in and it really is not all that engaging.
The physical book itself however is 5 stars, it's beautiful. The story line adds to it. Overall, definitely recommended for the hardcore Warcraft fan/player.

This is part of Blizzard's attempt at retconning some of the old strands of lore and reframing them into something more cohesive for the games. The thing is though, it's never been interesting lore and this is a particularly dry and textbook esque approach. Decent artwork but at best this is a coffee table book for die hard Warcraft fans.

I really love the lore but it would be way better if they added arts for the many characters, the type of demons etc... because the world is so big and there are so many sub-characters. They could've just formatted it into a novel because there was so much space to put visuals and maps but there were barely any. I guess it's probably my bad caus' I expected more out of a hard-covered book :( Thank god for Nobbel on Youtube! His videos actually covers the chronicles incredibly well while including visuals.

This book is great for anyone who is even slightly interested in the lore of Warcraft, this book series as a whole i am sure will be incredible. But the first volume explains so much about the origins of the factions that exist in the game and shed light on the motives of why Azeroth is so important. Its a great read and the art is amazing. Highly recommend to anyone even slightly interested in the Warcraft universe!

I've played this game for 10 years without knowing anything of the lore (I mostly do PvP) and boy, I was not disappointed! The lore is badass, can't wait to start volume 2!

Really well-made and organized, and it answers A LOT of important questions-are the Titans still alive? What is Elune?
The pictures are just magnificient, Blizzard's artists have never failed my highest expectations. The words are also proper for the antiquity feeling of content.
For those who are interested in the lore of Warcraft universe, I highly recommend you to buy this.

A high quality book that explains a lot about the Warcraft universe in a straightforward fashion.

As a player, I did a little endgame content during MoP, and have recently got back into WoW. I was very much enjoying the lore, but found it all confusing, and hearing it described on YouTube wasn't very exciting. After watching the movie (acting & dialogue isn't great, but it got me more into the lore), I decided to buy just this book, while playing through the starting areas in-game.
While this book is just a chronological list of events, it is well-written, and has intriguing story-lines. I often found myself eager to find out what happened to certain characters, and got through it relatively quickly. It takes you right up until where the movie starts. If you plan on watching the movie after reading, I suggest skipping over the last 2 pages, and returning after watching it to avoid spoilers. The only downside to it is the ridiculous amount of names you are required remember. The book does attempt to remind you of certain things when they are relevant, but much of the time it expects you to remember what everything is, and what happened before, which is no small feat. Fortunately the index is very helpful at finding the relevant information.
As a player who never took paid much attention to the lore/story (due to it being all over the place in-game, plus the game pushing you through the levels so fast you can't experience it), this book had so many "aha!" moments I couldn't count. It really made me excited to dig through more of the lore, and explore the world in-game as well. My current plan is to read through some of the novels, starting with "The Last Guardian", then read the other chronicles, all while playing the game.
Overall I would highly recommend this if you're at all interested in the lore of Warcraft. It's a high quality book that explains a lot about the Warcraft universe in a straightforward fashion.

A MUST FOR FANS OF WARCRAFT AND FANTASY FICTION
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 20, 2016Verified Purchase
Firstly, I'm very glad I chose to pre-order this book, as the price increased just as it was released; I'm very happy to have save myself almost £10
Secondly, the book itself is very impressive. The quality of the images, the binding, the pages, everything. Dark Horse has really outdone themselves for this one. As a massive lore nerd, I've had my eyes on this since they announced it, and now I've read a chapter or so, I'm so glad that light has been shed on a lot of unanswered questions.
One thing I must say though is that I feel that the book did not have ENOUGH artwork, that some of the passages and stories in the book that did not have artwork linked to them should have, as almost every story in the book is epic enough for it's own piece.
Regardless of this, I would highly HIGHLY recommend this book to any warcraft/WoW fan who is interested in the the lore, or even to people who are not familiar with the warcraft franchise but are fans of fantasy fiction.

All You Need to Know Before the Opening of the Dark Portal
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 5, 2020Verified Purchase
I originally bought this product sometime last year and only briefly read some of it. I decided to give this another shot since Shadowlands hype was building and I ended up getting through the entire book in a day and a half.
Honestly, this book is pretty much a perfect start to get into the Warcraft lore. It details the very beginning of creation of life in the Warcraft Universe, from the Titans to the Old God's, all the way down to how the majority of the main races came to be on Azeroth. This book essentially details right up to about 45 years before the opening of the Dark Portal (which would lead perfectly into Rise of the Horde). Now what does need to be said is that this book does take some other novels, such as Dawn of the Aspects, and basically narrows the story of that down to a few pages at most, so I'd say be wary of the spoilers if you plan to read the novels, but it's a VERY watered down version of events and I'm sure the novels themselves tell a grander story than the Chronicle.
Id give this a 4.5/5 instead of 5 stars only because I wish there were just a few more illustrations on some of the events that occur. Also I wish the book was a little smaller; having to hold a huge chunky hardcover book made it a little awkward for reading, but I do kind of get why they did it.
Still, this is a must have for anyone wanting to start getting into the WoW lore.

Beautifully glossy, and a little larger (in height) than I was expecting. The artwork is beautiful, and very much in keeping with what we've come to expect from the Warcraft universe. As for the literary content, I've really enjoyed it. It plugs up some unanswered lore questions, whilst fleshing out what we've already been told as the game story has unfolded. Some of it feels a little like a retcon in places, but I believe thats a good thing in this case. I'm not going to post any spoilers, but if you've been watching the forums on the books content, folks have been complaining about certain elements involving the true motivations behind some lore characters, both on the hero and villain sides. I don't see the problem, but I'll let you guys decide for yourself. All in all, I'm more than happy with it, and I'd happily recommend it to any fan of the game series.

Well worth the price. Comprehensive and easy to follow guide to all we never really knew
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 11, 2016Verified Purchase
An in-depth yet bitesize guide to the history and lore behind some of the most well known, yet not fully understood history of the game's universe, and Azeroth itself. Some truly incredible artwork, and many pages of "Hmm. I did not know that!" Superb quality makes this an item that can be read or referred to many times. Very glad I bought this book, even with the hefty price tag.
