5.0 out of 5 stars A real surprise
By Amazon Customer on December 1, 2019
Smith does an excellent job of mixing personal stories/histories with well-researched essays (though essays seems too formal a word) on what he sees as widespread fundamentalism, but not only of the religious variety. Though he studied to be a minister in a fringe church (well, one started in the mid-1900s), once he was excommunicated (for thinking for himself), he found aspects of fundamentalism (adhere to one truth!) everywhere, thus a series of essays discussing everything from UFO cults or the Nag Hammadi library, to postmodernist philosophy, social justice warriors, and Bill C-16 (Canada). Residents of New Brunswick (Canada) will recognize the chapter on working for "Megacorp."

Smith regularly references the bible (old and new testament, plus the Gnostic Gospels) along with great minds from the past (Hume, Locke, More) as well as more modern thinkers like Carl Jung, or Richard Dawkins, plus literature, film and popular culture (the title is a quote from The Matrix). It all makes for a rich reading experience and I really enjoyed Smith's personal stories and anecdotes -- such as trips to Peru, communist Romania, the Holy Land and his time at the Bricket Wood Campus of his former church.

This was an insightful and engaging read - well-written and not lacking for humour, especially the chapter dealing with the late David Hawkins (of Power vs Force fame).
