This tiny gadget can greatly improve the performance of certain television sets.
It allows you to hardwire a TV internet connection via Ethernet, through a USB 3.0 port.
I am using a 2021 Sony XR-77A80J or 'A80J' as it is typically referred to. Despite being a premium TV, units such as the A80J have 100mbps download limit capabilities when hardwired through their Ethernet port.
Wi-Fi does not have any limits, but is susceptible to degradation, stability issues, etc.
This adapter provides a workaround, allowing for the stability of Ethernet, without any speed limitations. This is done by utilizing built-in USB ports (USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 for even better speeds).
By increasing the internet speeds seen by the TV, not only do you ensure that you receive the best resolution possible from your streaming services, but it also benefits the overall user experience by speeding up load times on each of the apps.
With Sony TVs in particular, the Bravia Core streaming service requires a minimum of 113Mbps seen by the TV to ensure the best resolution/audio.
In my own setup, I was able to attain the following speeds through the built in speed-test in the Netflix app.
Wi-Fi : 46.69Mbps
Wi-Fi through eero 6 w/ hardwire to A80J Ethernet port: 93.13Mbps
Wi-Fi through eero 6: 108.92Mbps
Wi-Fi through eero 6 w/hardwire through adapter to USB 3.0 port: 205.81Mbps
A few days ago, my Sony A80J was seeing roughly 45Mbps via Wi-Fi.
Today, it is seeing 205Mbps through use of this adapter.
This represents a nearly 450% increase in download speed seen by the A80J, ensuring that this premium TV will actually be used to its full capabilities.
Currently, my internet plan is capped at 350Mbps. Unfortunately, due to placement restrictions, our A80J is on a different floor of the home, and in the opposite corner of our main router. This setup was improved by placing an eero 6 (provided by ISP) as an extender for the network near the TV.
While the extender itself is still wireless, it greatly boosted network speeds seen by functioning as a mesh network. This alone more than doubled the speeds seen by the TV. Hardwiring through the adapter resulted in the best experience though.
If I had the ability to hardwire through the adapter to our main hub, this speed would no doubt be maxed out at the 350Mbps provided by my internet service.
This adapter is plug-and-play. You literally plug the ethernet cable in one end, and plug the other into the USB port on your television set (USB 3.0 for best speeds if you have it, otherwise USB 2.0 will work).
Just make sure you disable Wi-Fi on your TV, and you are good to go.
100% worth every penny for anyone not making full use of your TV's capabilities.
*note that not every adapter works with every TV. I can only confirm that these work with 2021 lineup of Sony TVs.

This was tested on an LG C1 77” TV (basement TV - where router etc is located).
FYI when you plug these adapters in, it will say you aren’t connected to Ethernet (it just means the built in Ethernet port) try Netflix etc you’ll see you are connected to the internet.
I bought both Cable Matters and the UGREEN 3.0 Ethernet Adapters as I plan to use 1 in basement and 1 for bedroom. My Wifi speed usually hits around 165-175mbps using the Netflix speed test.
With the Cable Matters I get around 166 to180mbps which is on par with my wifi speed, and at least it’s wired and stable I’d be happy with this result (for basement TV).
The UGREEN tho was giving me around 195 to 203mpbs, I tested both on all of my USB 2.0 ports on the TV and same results, the UGREEN came out faster.
Both are more than enough for streaming, tho when I get my Ethernet put in the bedroom speeds will of course be slower, this is where I would choose the UGREEN because that extra 20-30 mbps could help have stable streams for Bravia Core (tho the Sony A95L has USB 3.0 ports so that should give an extra boost in speed), not to mention the UGREEN is cheaper atm.
You’d be fine with this Adapter but UGREEN is cheaper and faster (at least with my tests) so if I need to get another for living-room TV I’d pick up the UGREEN adapter.
FYI when you plug these adapters in, it will say you aren’t connected to Ethernet (it just means the built in Ethernet port) try Netflix etc you’ll see you are connected to the internet.
I bought both Cable Matters and the UGREEN 3.0 Ethernet Adapters as I plan to use 1 in basement and 1 for bedroom. My Wifi speed usually hits around 165-175mbps using the Netflix speed test.
With the Cable Matters I get around 166 to180mbps which is on par with my wifi speed, and at least it’s wired and stable I’d be happy with this result (for basement TV).
The UGREEN tho was giving me around 195 to 203mpbs, I tested both on all of my USB 2.0 ports on the TV and same results, the UGREEN came out faster.
