The perfect pfSense firewall
5 out of 5 stars
The perfect pfSense firewall
I bought this as I was looking to upgrade my Edgerouter X for something a bit beefier that could handle selective routing of certain machines through an OpenVPN client, create some point-to-point VPN tunnels, has a CPU with AES_NI, etc. I would've used a full sized PC but I wanted something low power and that could run off battery backup for awhile if needed.I got the barebones unit which claimed to have an i3-4005U but mine came with a slightly higher spec'd i3-4030U (1.7 -> 1.9GHz, ~300 passmark boost). I put in an 8GB dimm and a sketchy, dirt cheap 64GB mSATA drive and this thing flies. I should've done some more research as the box does have a built in SATA power + data connector pre-wired, so would've gone with a cheaper 120GB 2.5" SSD over the mSATA if I could do it again.I thought I had problems with Shaw previously, but it turns out it was just my old router.. I am now getting 2x single threaded download throughput compared to before. Maxing out my connection downloading at ~650Mbps barely touches the CPU, only hits ~7 or 8% usage. It seems to idle around 45-47ºC and the case (acting as a large heat sink) does get a bit warm to the touch, but nothing concerning and those temps seem fine for a fan-less silent machine.Only minor build quality "issue" is that the metal power button does seem to rattle a bit when you pick it up. I initially thought something was loose inside but soon realized it was just the power button shifting around in it's socket a bit.If you're looking for a nice low power machine to run pfSense/OPNsense/etc - this thing is fantastic. Highly recommended.

I purchased this on March 1, 2019. It appears the product has been updated, so some of the other reviews have out of date information. The listing still says it has an Intel i3-4005U processor; my unit came with an Intel i3-5020U. Nice to have the free upgrade. Secondly, they've fixed the mislabelled Ethernet ports. Here's the new port mappings, as listed in pfSense 2.4.4 Patch 2:

Port 1: igb0
Port 2: igb1
Port 3: igb2
Port 4: igb4

So it's now as it should be.

I have Gigabit service through Bell Fibe. I'm using PPPoE passthrough on my Home Hub 3000, and I'm getting about 850Mbps symmetric. So not quite full line speed. Fibe is usually pretty consistent, though it's possible the speeds are temporarily slow. I haven't done too much testing as I only received the unit today. I only did a couple runs on Speedtest.net, I'd have to do more testing to determine if it's really not capable of gigabit routing. May be capable of higher speeds. At max throughput, CPU load is 12% as displayed in the pfSense dashboard.

Biggest flaw is it's picky about USB drives it will boot from. It doesn't work with my go-to flash drive for embedded installations, the SanDisk Cruzer Fit:
https://www.amazon.ca/Sandisk-Cruzer-Low-Profile-Drive-SDCZ33-032G-B35/dp/B00812F7O8/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=sandisk+flash+drive&qid=1551506729&s=gateway&sr=8-16
After installing from another flash drive to a Cruzer Fit, the machine simply fails to boot, with an error stating that boot media could not be found. Disappointing, so I ended up needing to use an HDD via SATA. HDDs fit nicely into the case, there are mounting holes on the base plate to secure a drive. That was a nice surprise since from the outside, the case looks like it would be a tight fit.

Great product, would recommend. It's replacing a Dell R610 1U server that I was using for pfSense before, so it's nice to have something that's so low-power and silent.

Passively cooled and quite means that if you are going to put a lot of strain on it, you want airflow around it.
I am using this as a PFSense router and it works perfectly. Installation was easy and it has more than enough horse power to support gigabit internet. Would buy this unit again

I have this particular product running PFsense, managing my home services and internet. It is running various classes of traffic through 5 vlans and is able to handle transparent proxy/filtering with no apparent stress.

We have 4 kids so there can be significant traffic depending on the time of day. There are also several Mikrotik wireless routers connected, each trunking multiple vlans and handling authentication from a FreeIPA server hiding under my workbench.

Overall, very happy with this device. Serves as a professional router with ease.

EDIT : An earlier review mentioned the out-of-order ports. This is true and caused me some confusion.

I've been running this as my perimeter firewall at home for a few months now. I have nothing bad to say about it.

It stays at a solid 47 Celcius and isn't really hot to the touch. It's silent. I use 3 of the 4 NICs and they all work fine. It runs pfSense/OPNSense perfectly. I'd recommend it to anyone! I did put my own RAM and SSD into it, which was recommended, and ended up being cheaper than the model that comes with those already installed.

So far I have been extremely impressed. I have used this personally and for clients, including single internet and failover situations, with and without VPN. No hardware/software issues with pfSense updates.

I use this i3 model as my firewall running opnsense software. It easily handles gigabit wan with Rogers and barely spike in CPU. It’s also fast and has enough physical ports for me to use for different networks and vlans. Nothing else out there compares to the feature, value and pricing.

This PC is perfect for using it as a business class PFsense router, except for 1 major flaw. It will not power back up after power loss. The BIOS has the setting for it, it simply doesn't work. Tried "Last State" as well as "Always On", but sadly these settings do nothing and are ignored. What a shame. I would have used a bunch for branch offices, but the hardware is useless if it requires a human to press the power button. Wake On LAN is useless if the router is off and you can't remote in to run the command. I've tried upgrading the BIOS to the highest level, no improvement.
