Fascinating, mind-boggling, exciting book. It made me realize many things about human beings and thought processes, and symbolism as well. I understand Prof. Peterson makes an active, conscious effort to use very, very precise words to express himself, and this carefulness often turns itself into long-winded, complex sentences. One needs to be very focused while reading Maps of Meaning. I had to re-read numerous passages to fully grasp the concepts explained. Often, the same idea is reworded differently within the same section, using different words, which helps commit them to memory.

I recommend watching the youtube videos of his class first to get a summary of Maps of Meaning before delving into this reading session.

5+ for content, 3 for style.

The content of the book is fantastic, and 'Maps of Meaning' is definitely a read for anyone who is on a self reflective journey. My only critic is of the publishers who printed the book, Edwards Brothers Malloy, as they print is of very low revolution and the characters are poorly filled. This makes the reading experience a bit more cumbersome, albeit still worth while due to the content.

Jordan Peterson has become a centre-stage phenomena in recent years. For many long decades prior, however, he was deeply influencing hundreds of people through his clinical psychotherapy practice, and by teaching psychology to university students. One of the most life changing professors at the University of Toronto, it has been said. Maps of Meaning is an important book which will likely be remembered in the histories of evolutionary psychology and religious studies. It's a work of interdiscipinary brilliance.
As someone who hasn't read much Joseph Campbell, I cant reckon with the criticism that Peterson hasnt said anything significant that Campbell hadn't already. Peterson does seem to be either unfamiliar with much of Campbell's work, or dismissive of it for reasons that are perhaps less than valid. From the bit I know, the two men have articulated profoundly similar worldviews that include the archetypal need for shadow integration, yet Peterson accuses Campbell of new age whimsical bliss-seeking.
Maps of Meaning is one of the most well-written academic books I have read. It's a powerful book that is likely to alter you -- for the better, permanently, psychologically and physiologically.
If you're reading this while considering purchasing the book, just do yourself a favor and be decisive in taking the leap. You will be plunged into an abysmal and chaotic undertow of treachery, but you will emerge as something a little bit more like a hero -- ready to enact the story embedded in every epic, and live the most meaningful life that is possible for you.

This book has delivered as promised by reviewers I encountered before buying. Reading is like a compelling journey through history that 'maps' onto your own mind. The effect is to see your own belief systems, personal beliefs, reactions, impressions...etc. with a new understanding that informs about why you have been doing things the way you have. Bold claims....I know, but these are my responses to the work. It's dense and rich with detail; so prepare to take extra time to read and chunk smaller sections so you can digest. I also like the no-arrogance approach to myth and primordial humans. Peterson makes clear that these were not superstitious fallacies, but real human grasping for understanding and right acting in a dangerous world. We are still doing this. You should read it.
