I chose the 5 star rating because I was blown away by the quality of the work. Reading the book became a sacred act of self-loving even though I recognize that I've been patting myself on the back for simply reading the work as though it's value could somehow rub off on me. As a Canadian of Colour, I've often wondered about the contemporary voice of our First Nation cousins and I'm glad to have spent my hard-earned money on this book as an act of solidarity. This book provides a deeping education about the issues facing Indigenous communities in this country. I loved how the work held states of joy and grief in pretty much equal measure. The words felt real and honest. I especially liked how Ms. Simpson courageously laid herself open & bare on the page - I really connected with her " no B.S" attitude. She's displays commendable feats of strength in her willingness to be vulnerable, sitting with her feelings and allowing her thoughts to be expressed. Very powerful work!
This book was a game changer for me. It carefully blended humour, theory, love, wit, and profound thought all while deftly oscillating between poetry and prose. Simpson gets to the heart of human connection and interaction and lays it bare. I have read and re-read this book, and I will continue to turn to it for the rest of my life.
This is unlike any book I’ve ever read. The different storytelling techniques worked really well for me – it’s a beautiful, raw, honest and a very necessary book. I read several of the pieces in here multiple times – there’s so much to chew on here, every read offers new insights. offers new insights. Highly recommended!
