This book is very candid and very readable for those of us who do not understand how the ER works.

I learned so much about what a busy ER takes to run smoothly. Doctors and nurses on the night shift often get the worst traumas, are the most sleep deprived, walk a fine line on whether to wake a specialist for a consult. Then there is the never ending paper work, the patients who are in the ER for narcotics, who lie to the doctors, who have mental problems or just want a warm bed for the night. The truly sick and injured need to be treated with speed and efficiency and the stream of patients is never ending. I have a lot of respect for these health care workers.
