The Energy Power Base is a set of speakers meant to be placed directly under your television. The speaker box is big and sturdy - it certainly has no problem supporting our 42" TV. In the manual, it specifies that your TV should be no more than 80 lbs and have a base no larger than 23 x 12 inches -- in other words, this unit will accommodate just about any flatscreen TV out there. The only thing to keep in mind is that placing this under your TV will add approx. 4 inches to your viewing height.
As for the sound quality... it is very good. It's only a 2.1 system, but its powerful and the range is nice. You have complete control over both the volume and the bass. I spent a day going back and forth, comparing the Energy Power Base to my TV speakers - and I didn't notice much difference when watching the evening news; but as soon as you watch a movie or put on some music, you'll hear the difference.
Setup is very easy - you only need two cables; a power cable and an audio connection cable (both included). It only took me about 10 minutes to get it up and running (if you run into trouble, the owner's manual has all the answers. For the highest quality sound, use the Digital Optical cable. If your TV/device does not have an optical output, then you'll need to use the RCA cable (the old red-and-white connection).
The speaker has a couple of special features: 1) The 3D button on the remote can be used to simulate 3D surround sound (although it's nowhere near as good as actually having a 5.1 channel speaker setup). 2) The Bluetooth option allows you to pair a device (such as an iPhone) with the speakers wirelessly - no cables needed.
