Is It Worth the Wait?
February 13, 2019
Edit: If you are unfamiliar with the Kingdom Hearts franchise, I highly recommend you do your research first. Go checkout the previous games. Get *Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix* or *Kingdom Hearts The Story So Far*, which contains everything you need to know before Kingdom Hearts III. However, if you want to jump into this one right away without playing the previous games, there are a bunch of good Kingdom Hearts summaries and analysis out there that will explain the franchise better than I can.
I have been following Kingdom Hearts for a long time. I was really anticipating KH III. I have recently finished the game but I was left a little disappointed. Overall, it is not a bad game. It is fun and flashy gameplay wise, but lacking when it comes to storytelling and character development.
The good stuff:
+ Love the new keyblades, combat is very fluid and fun.
+ The new animations and cutscenes are beautiful. The Disney characters look almost as good, if not just as good as in their respective movies
+ Stays true to the essence of Kingdom Hearts. Sora's overly optimistic attitude and constant talk about friendship will be sure to *light* up your darkest days
+ Contains a synopsis of previous games that you can checkout anytime
Now down to the cons:
- Felt a little short (takes about 30 hours to complete) compared to Kingdom Hearts II and does not have as many worlds
- There is a very strong emphasis on recently popular Disney movies like Frozen, leaving many older dearly beloved Disney worlds in the dust of Oblivion.
- The story in most of the worlds felt rushed and could use more refinement. For example, in the world of Tangled, you would most likely be lost if you have not seen the original movie as it leaves a out a lot of the original plot details.
(This last one might be a bit of a spoiler)
- Kairi is still useless after an entire decade of waiting and anticipation.
