So Much More than a Mere True Crime Story
March 20, 2018
This is a must read for any true crime reader. It's part posthumous autobiography and part narrative true story. Michelle McNamara tells a horrifying story about a prolific rapist and murderer active in California from 1976 to 1986 that most people had never heard of until McNamara's too soon death during the writing of the book. Her loving husband, Patton Oswalt, and some of Michelle's true crime researcher friends helped to complete this story of a man who eluded several jurisdictions of law enforcement and to this day remains unidentified.
Michelle also tells us about herself and her obsession with this white whale of a case, how she went from a true crime blogger to a researcher that many, if not all, of the police investigators and criminalists consider a partner and investigator in her own right.
If that weren't enough, this book is a testament to the love the author inspired in her husband, daughter, and the many other lives she touched in her brief time. I really can't recommend this book enough.
And if they ever decide to make a movie from its pages, Patton's touching vignette about his daughter's first stirrings of an investigative mind has to be the closing scene.
