I liked this movie a lot although I am not sure I loved it. I would probably give it 4.5 out of 5 if I could. Even though there have been several different Lego movies since the first one came out, seeing the Lego come to life on the screen is still visually impressive. And the movie did a good job of changing up the settings to keep it fresh, which I appreciated. There is a whole post-apocalyptic world at the beginning that has an amazing design. Even the character changes look really good, especially post-apocalyptic, angry-monster Unikitty.
The story is fun. Like the first one it is kind of easy for adults to figure out where it is going. But since it was a kid’s movie I didn’t mind too much. There were also some good story twists along the way which helped as did some really funny lines and visual gags.
The voice acting was decent, although it is pretty much Emmet’s story so there is a lot of Chris Pratt. He does ok. I do wish they had given the secondary characters more do, especially Spaceman Benny, Metal Beard and Unikitty since I thought the actors voicing those characters were better even in their limited roles. Elizabeth Banks is also pretty great as Lucy, especially at the beginning of the movie when she is trying to act dark and tough.
The movie is a lot more musical than the first one with several musical numbers by the characters. Normally that kind of thing would bug me but the lyrics of the songs were really funny so that helped.
If you liked the first one this one is worth checking out. Even if the story isn’t the best I think the visuals and the jokes alone make it worth it.
