What a Blast!
April 9, 2019
I saw this movie with my 8 year old daughter this week and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. After some of the previews I wasn't sure that Brie Larson could pull off the super hero thing but she did really well. Her friendship chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson is great. She actually has great chemistry with everyone in the cast, including the people who are her enemies.
The story is kind of a basic super hero with missing memories origin story. But they way they reveal those memories is pretty good, with some surprising twists. They move the story from outer space to earth pretty quickly which I liked. And the best part of all was it was 1995 earth. The way they did 1995 was pretty awesome, it looked real, without too many over the top with cheesy references. And the soundtrack had a great mix of 90's songs.
Visually the movie had some great effects. The CGI on the shape shifting Skrulls was some of the best shape shifting I have ever seen. Even the fight scenes were well shot with a good mix of fist fights and space battles. And I liked that Captain Marvel used her powers in a smart and effective way.
Overall if you are a fan of super hero stuff this is worth checking out. I am looking forward to seeing Captain Marvel in the next Avengers movie, and I hope she gets a 90's set sequel.
