Amazing Fix to my Joystick Drift
June 27, 2019
After tolerating joystick drift on my Nintendo Switch joycon for months on end I finally decided I couldn't live with it anymore. After a little research I found that it's actually not that difficult to swap out just the stick itself rather than buy a whole new set of joycons for $90.
I chose this set because it had the tools included (I needed the 'Y' tri-wing screwdriver). The set arrived quickly and everything that was pictured and described was included with the exception of the two interior screws (didn't care because I was reusing the screws I took out anyhow). Reading other reviews I was worried about the quality of the tools themselves but I'm not sure if the other reviewers got different tools or just weren't familiar with this type.
The tools themselves were perfect for this job. The tri-wing screwdriver was the exact size needed for the joycons and the yellow piece on the end that spins is designed that way so you can put a fair amount of pressure down into the screw while spinning the rest of the screwdriver. That is important to prevent stripping the screws and not being able to remove them. The pry bar worked great for popping the joycon open without damaging the plastic casing.
Then it was on to the important part the joystick itself. I installed it, put the joycon back together, and then fired up the switch. Immediately I noticed my cursor wasn't moving all on its own like it used to because of the drift on my old stick. I calibrated the joystick and it was like brand new. I only did the left joycon because my right stick wasn't drifting at all.
Later on I plan to replace my other left joycon stick as it has a bit of drift as well. For the price I really don't think there should be any complaints. It replaces two joysticks vs replacing joycons at $90 and it comes with all the tools. Down the road you'll already have the tools so you can just get the sticks for like $10.
