The Reader's Digest version!
May 13, 2016
I know, I know -- it's only 8 hours long and there is a lot of material from the 1,400 page "novel" to cram into those 8 hours. But some of my favourite minor characters are missing, and granted that the storyline moves fast, you might just miss something important if you even sneeze or blink!
A printed episode-guide would have been welcome, especially since Anchor Entertainment decided to rearrange the DVD into 8 45-minute episodes. You can't rely on the Wikipedia write-up to guide you, as it reflects the structure of the original broadcast -- 6 50-minute episodes.
However, the acting is quite good and the photography and actual settings are great! Thus the three stars. But once I finish viewing this new BBC ONE release, I will go back to the original 1972 BBC mini-series filmed in electronic video to find out what I have missed. Even if the technology is a bit dated, I have grown quite fond of the cast, including among others Sir Anthony Hopkins as Pierre.
