If you don't know what you're doing -- this book will tell you exactly what to do. It involves letting them learn to sleep on their own -- which yes - involves crying. Babies cry - that's what they do. the book basically gives you a routine to follow to train you kid -- it works.

I used the technique in this book and so did many of our friends with great success. The technique, although it may seem rigid, simply explains that a newborn will get accustomed to the habits you create for him/her. The recommendations in here - like making sure to put the baby down while still awake, to not give a pacifier when putting them to bed... - are all well rationalized and explained and make perfect sense. Also, the author suggests to only start once the baby seems ready (I'd recommend not before 4-5 months).
Of course, every baby is different and every parent has the right to their own approach. However, given the 1-star ratings seem to have been given by people that don't agree with the technique, didn't apply it or even better, didn't even finish the book; I felt important to share that the technique worked miracles for us and that this book certainly deserves another 5-star rating! It really did change our life. We started at around 5 months and since then, our little pumpkin sleeps 2-4 hours during the day and 11-12 hours straight at night. We used to get up 2-3 times at night... Those days are long gone and most importantly, since then, our baby is less grumpy during the day, makes up much more relaxed and happy.
